.
Open Source CGI and Multimedia Trainings

Held in Sofia, Bulgaria the trainings will be available in two sessions, the first happening in May (14th - 20th) and the second in August (6th - 12th).
Each session has 14 seats available in a 7 days time frame.

Deadline for enrollment is 10th of April for the first training session and 30th of June for the second training session.

Each session has a participation fee of 1000 Euro, that covers the 56 hours training and 7 days accommodation in Sofia, including coffee-breaks and lunches.
The fee will not include traveling expenses.

Scholarships covering the participation fee will be available, based on the quality of the applications, motivation letter and will be mainly for the applicants from South Eastern Europe.

The training is aimed at young professionals working in the fields of 3D CGI, post-production, video editing, animation and special effects. With a focus on improving the professional skills of the participants from the audio-visual industries and enable independent professionals to produce more quality content at lower production costs saving money otherwise for software licenses.

The training will focus mostly on Blender and Cinelerra, but it doesn't stop there, covering everything needed to setup an open source studio for recording and editing sound, setting up and using version-control and groupware tools for optimizing the production process and going even deeper into building a render farm and optimizing hardware and software.

Software Included in the Training Programme

Blender (http://blender.org) is the open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback.
Blender is an industry standard, featuring broad functionality and extremely intuitive interface, completely sufficient for thorough production studio set up.

Cinelerra (http://heroinewarrior.com) does 3 main things: capturing, compositing and editing audio and video with sample level accuracy.
It's a seamless integration of audio, video and still photos.

GIMP (http://gimp.org) is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for tasks such as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

Ardour (http://ardour.org) Ardour is a digital audio workstation. You can use it to record, edit and mix multi-track audio as well as mix video soundtracks and experiment with new ideas about music and sound.

and more .......

Training Agenda

The full program for each session is available on http://tosmi.i-space.org

The program of the course consists of different modules and it guides the participants through the basic stages of realizing a product.

Introduction to Free and Open Source Software.

History, philosophy and mapping of the main available tools. The moral and technological benefits of using this software will be shown. Free content and licenses such as Creative Commons.

Computer 3D Animation

Introduction to Blender 3D software and its main features. Graphical interface, shortcuts and the organization of the working environment.
The main tasks of the production process such as: model creation, texture unwrapping, painting, material shaders, character setup, deformers, animation, lighting and rendering, will be demonstrated using various tools.

Post-Production

Preview of the existing free software for composing, color correction, visual effects, motion tracking and video editing. Test and discussion on the advantages and disadvantages.

Audio

Basic principles of audio under GNU/Linux. Introduction to ALSA and JACK sound server. Audio editing and multi track recording with Ardour GTK. Effects and mastering with LADSPA as a development environment for real time effects and musical instruments.

Technological Infrastructure

Selecting the appropriate hardware. Preview of different types of hardware for building a system for online video editing and rendering. Designing a cluster, installing and administrating a decentralized rendering; Presentation of the Dr. Queue rendering farm management system. Presentation and demonstration the systems for file organization, version tracking, bug reporting and documentation.
