Galleria Cardi, Piazza Sant’Erasmo 3, Milano a Palazzo Ca’ Pesaro, Venezia BERNARDÌ ROIG Opening: Friday 5th 9 pm, Palazzo Ca’ Pesaro, Venice THE EXIBITION Shadows must dance | | An active dialogue between images of the present and the past generates a web of untold meanings and a new emotional dynamics. This is Shadows Must Dance: an exhibition project especially conceived for Ca' Pesaro by Bernardí Roig, one of the most prominent names in the Spanish contemporary art scene. Fifteen of his works, realized in the last fifteen years – mainly sculptures, but also installations, drawings and videos – are arranged to trigger a dialogue with the museum spaces and masterpieces. The exhibition is a co-production between Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and IVAM (Institut Valencià d'Art Modern), with the collaboration of Galleria Cardi, Milan. Curated by Consuelo Ciscar and Silvio Fuso, based on an idea of Bernardí Roig, Maurizio Caldirola and Daniele Sorrentino, it is realized for the 53rd Venice Biennale, and will be hosted in Valencia in November. The show is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue published by IVAM, containing a wide selection of installation photographs and essays by Consuelo Ciscar, Silvio Fuso, Fernando Castro, Guy Gilsoul, Demetrio Paparoni, Daniele Sorrentino and George Stolsz. Bernardì Roig spent a long time working at Ca’ Pesaro, picking from its vast collection a number of works he could relate to his artistic practice: this way, by constructing an original itinerary, he generates new meanings that allow not only for the reinvention of the works but also of the space accomodating them. Bernardì Roig's practice proposes a reflection on the contemporary human condition; on his isolation, his desires and immortality. Regardless of the medium chosen – sculpture, drawing, video – the artist's creations revolve on the two key concepts of body confinment and impossibility of vision. His notorious white scuptures – casts of real people – represent a journey where the memory of the image plays a vital role. Roig's work could be defined as a cast of a society at the edges, at a time teinted by the loss of historical memory and identity. The inability of seizing new images constitutes the dominant theme, for which light becomes a metaphor; lamps, luminous signs, fluorescent tubes encase his subjects, blinding them. From here, the artist explores the dynamics of voyeurism and the unsettling dimension of artistic imagery, revisiting classical myths, baroque iconography and memento mori, filtered through the fundamental issues of postmodern thought. | | OPENING EVENT Shadows must dance: Opening Act (produced by Galleria Cardi and Grey Goose) | | Friday 5th of June 2009, from 9 pm, Galleria Cardi and Grey Goose proudly present “Shadows must dance: Opening Act”, a night to synthesize Bernardì Roig's special project at the Galleria Internazionale di Arte Moderna of Cà Pesaro Palace, in occasion of the 53rd Venice Biennale of Visual Arts. Images, sound, light and video will invade the museum spaces for a one night only event transforming Ca’ Pesaro into an electric pole that will illuminate the entire Canal Grande. A project by Maurizio Caldirola and Daniele Sorrentino, “Shadows must dance: Opening Act” will see the participation of H.E.R. - internationally acclaimed violinist and singer, whose practice is characterised by a strong performative accent - and Massimo Visconti - digital artist currently at Virgin Radio, will entertain the public with a mix of electronic rhythms, dreamy voices, guitars and lights. The videos, each four-minutes long, were realized by Donatella Corrado from images by Bernardì Roig, in a continuous draw towards the research of a desired light. In the magmatic and primordial darkness, sudden sounds and hinted images prelude to the emergence of a light element, where bodies and snapshots are eventually freed, to invest the crowd. Between the projections, visual scenes will accompany the spectator in the suggestion of the expectation, where each element casts new light, where new emotional icons are generated and Roig's practice becomes charged of new meanings. | | | | | | | | | |
