Während der Berlin Art Week unternimmt Art Laboratory
Berlin eine Rück- und Vorschau: rückblickend präsentieren wir die Ergebnisse der
ersten drei Workshops der Nonhuman Agents-Serie, die im Juni 2017
begonnen hat. Zudem geben wir einen Ausblick auf unser Herbstprogramm.
Dokumentation und Artefakte der bisherigen Veranstaltungen werden vorgestellt:
Gut feelings (Alanna Lynch); Anatomy of an
inter-connected system (Margherita Pevere); Forestal
psyche (Theresa Schubert). Darüber einige Einblicke in kommende
Events (ill-at-ease seep, lecture von Sarah Hermanutz,

Der 2-Tages-Workshop versteht sich als partizipatives
Experiment zu Kunst, Performance und Biologie, das der Ausstellung Nonhuman
Networks vorausgeht, die Ende September eröffnet wird. Das Projekt lädt die
Teilnehmer ein, die Stadt Berlin durch die Perspektive des intelligenten
einzelligen Organismus Physarum Polycephalum zu betrachten (u.a. auch
über GPS Tracking).

Die Ausstellung Nonhuman Networks präsentiert
ästhetische Entwürfe neuer Kommunikationsformen zwischen menschlichen und
nichtmenschlichen Akteuren. Wie funktioniert der weltweit größte Einzeller als
Computer? Welchen Zugang können wir zum sogenannten "Internet des Waldes"
bekommen? Die herausragenden performativen Arbeiten der international
anerkannten Künstler/innen stellen eine Möglichkeit für das Publikum dar, sich auf
außersprachliche Formen und Kontakt mit unterschiedlichen, scheinbar simplen
Lebensformen einzulassen.
Das
Kollektiv mit Saša Spacal, Mirjan Švagelj und
Anil Podgornik verbindet Kunst, Biologie und Kybernetik, um
eine Plattform für eine Kommunikation zwischen Arten zu schaffen. In
Myconnect wird das Nervensystem einer Person mit einem Pilz-Myzel in
einer Biofeedback-Schleife verbunden. Nach dem Betreten der Kapsel wird eine
Person mit einem Herzschlagsensor, Kopfhörer und Vibrationsmotoren ausgestattet,
die auf verschiedenen Körperteilen platziert sind. Der menschliche Herzschlag
setzt das System in Bewegung. Das Signal fährt durch das Myzel, wo es in
Echtzeit moduliert wird. Das modulierte Signal wird über Klang, Licht und
taktile Sinnesimpulse wieder in den menschlichen Körper zurück übertragen. Die
überwältigenden Reize, die das Nervensystem beeinflussen, verursachen eine
Veränderung des Herzschlags. Eine neue Schleife beginnt, und der Kreis ist
geschlossen. Eine Symbiose von Signalen beginnt.
Heather
Barnett ist Künstlerin, Forscherin und Vermittlerin, die mit
Naturphänomenen und biologischem Design arbeitet, oft gemeinsam mit
Wissenschaftlern, Künstlern, Teilnehmern und Organismen. Mit Hilfe lebender
Materialien und bildgebender Technologien erforscht ihre Praxis, wie wir die
Welt um uns herum beobachten, repräsentieren und verstehen. Zu den Projekten
gehören mikrobielle Porträts, Modellbildung von Systemen und eine fortlaufende
"Zusammenarbeit" mit einem intelligenten Schleimpilz, Physarum polycephalum. Als
einer der weltweit größten einzelligen Organismen besitzt der Schleimpilz die
Fähigkeit, räumliche Probleme zu lösen und durch die Interaktion mit seinem
Umfeld zu lernen. Die Ausstellung baut auf Barnetts einzigartige Kombination
zwischen interdisziplinärer Forschung und partizipatorischer Praxis auf.

This 2-day workshop is a participatory
experiment on art, performance and biology that precedes the exhibition
Nonhuman Networks. The project invites the participants to view the
city of Berlin by the nonhuman perspectives of the intelligent single-cell
organism Physarum polycephalum and GPS tracking.

Nonhuman
Networks presents an aesthetics of new
forms of communication between human and nonhuman actors. How does the world's
largest single celled creature function as a computer? Can we tap into the
so-called 'Internet of trees'? Performative works act as enablers for the
audience to engage in non-linguistic forms of awareness and contact with several
deceptively simple life forms.
Saša
Spacal, Mirjan Švagelj and Anil
Podgornik combine art, biology and cybernetics to create a platform for inter
species communication. In Myconnect the nervous system of a person and
fungal mycelium are plugged into a biofeedback loop. By entering the capsule a
person is equipped with a heartbeat sensor, headphones and vibrational motors
that are placed on various parts of the body. The heartbeat of a person sets the
system in motion. The signal travels through the mycelium where it is modulated
in real-time. The modulated signal is transferred back to the human body via
sound, light and tactile sensory impulses. The overwhelming stimuli that affect
the nervous system cause an alteration of the heartbeat. A new loop begins and
the circle is closed. A symbiosis of signals begins.
Heather Barnett is an artist,
researcher and educator working with natural phenomena and biological design,
often in collaboration with scientists, artists, participants and organisms.
Utilising living materials and imaging technologies, her practice explores how
we observe, represent and understand the world around us. Projects include
microbial portraiture, systems modelling, and an ongoing 'collaboration' with an
intelligent slime mould, Physarum polycephalum. As one of the world's largest
single-celled organisms, the slime mould possesses the ability to solve spatial
problems and learn from interactions with its environment. The exhibition builds
upon Barnett's unique combination of interdisciplinary research and
participatory practice.
