of Tennessee The Community Partnership Center (CPC) at the University 
of Tennessee is seeking (pending approval) a dynamic and self-motivated 
individual for a unique opportunity as Program Coordinator for the Participatory Research and Planning 
Program and Youth in Development 
Initiative. The CPC is internationally recognized as a leader in 
approaches that promote greater public participation in community development, 
planning, public policy and research.  
The CPC was recognized as a United States Department of Housing and Urban 
Development national best practices recipient in 2000 (one of only four 
university based centers in the United States to receive such an honor).  The CPC has developed several innovative 
models for engaging community members in civic issues and social change that 
have been featured at international conferences and workshops, and highlighted 
in professional, academic and government publications in the United States and 
abroad.  The CPC works with a 
network of over 1,000 community development, planning, public management, social 
service and public policy practitioners from 47 states, the District of 
Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 53 nations.  The Program 
Coordinator will be responsible for the management and ongoing development of 
both the Participatory Research and 
Planning Program and the Youth in 
Development Initiative.    Duties will 
include: ·        
Manage all components of the Participatory Research and Planning 
Program and the Youth in Development Initiative ·        
Grant writing and project development ·        
Implement projects that promote public participation in community 
development ·        
Implement community youth development projects ·        
Manage and expand the CPC’s growing international network of 
government agencies, development agencies and practitioners ·        
Develop partnerships with local, regional, national and 
international organizations who focus on public participation, community 
planning, community development, community youth development and international 
development ·        
Plan and lead an international field-training on public 
participation in community development ·        
Manage and expand the CPC’s international online community of 
practitioners through virtual consulting and community development technical 
assistance services (including a public participation discussion list) ·        
Develop and coordinate an international technical assistance panel 
of practitioners who can provide online consultation to members of the CPC’s 
community development network or other interested parties ·        
Publish articles and hand-books on the CPC’s programs, projects 
and approaches ·        
Edit a quarterly journal on public participation in civic affairs 
and research ·        
Make presentations on the CPC’s programs, projects and approaches 
at national and international meetings ·        
Assist with the planning and implementation of public 
participation initiatives in the Knoxville, TN Empowerment Zone (EZ) ·        
Assist with the planning and implementation of participatory 
sustainable development case studies in TX, AL, NC and KY. Qualifications: ·        
An advanced or professional degree in a relevant field ·        
A minimum of (3) years experience in community development and 
program management ·        
Skills and experience in public participation, community-based 
research, community planning, community youth development and group 
facilitation ·        
Experience working in urban and rural low resource communities and 
multi-cultural environments ·        
Community Development experience in more than one city / region / 
state or country preferred ·        
Familiarity with service learning and university / community 
outreach programs ·        
Experience in grant writing and grant management ·        
Excellent verbal and written communication skills ·        
Knowledge or experience in PowerPoint, list-serves / discussion 
lists, media arts (i.e. photography and videography), digital technologies, data 
bases, and web page design helpful ·        
Proficiency in speaking Spanish helpful Salary and Start 
Date: The salary range for this position is $32,000 to $40,000 
(US), depending on experience.  The 
incumbent will receive full University of Tennessee employee benefits, including 
health insurance and retirement plan.  
The target start date for this position is Monday July 30, 2001. Applications
