Thank you David for those wise reflections -- I wonder if we can take 
the perspective that it is not the arrival of pan-global capitalist 
energies, but simply the expressions of the human desire for POWER in 
any form.  Capitalism is another name for the intense human drive to 
accumulate power (as a means of survival).  Friendship, the critical 
basis for all networks, runs into trouble when the open, balanced 
possibility of dialogue becomes submerged in a slowly rising flood of 
contempt-for-the-Other, and the belief that what one says 
intrinsically has more value than what the Other says, EVEN IF THE 
OTHER IS SILENT!  nettime is a dance not of the different voices 
heard, but of the voices and the silence between those voices...
