Vectorial Elevation: Relational Architecture 4
Edited by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

Synopsis:
With the arrival of the year 2000, Mexico City's Zócalo Square was transformed by immense light sculptures created by participants on the Internet using a virtual reality program. This book documents the interactive art project Vectorial Elevation, which allowed thousands of people from 89 countries to control 18 robotic searchlights with 126,000 watts of power and link Cyberspace with Mexico's most emblematic urban landscape. Prominent artists and critics analyze the historical, aesthetic and technological impact of this massive "Relational Architecture" intervention.

Contributors:
Andreas Broeckmann (Germany), Daniel Canogar (Spain), Erik Davis (USA), María Fernández (Nicaragua / USA), Erkki Huhtamo (Finland), Geert Lovink (Netherlands / Australia), Brian Massumi (USA / Australia), Mónica Mayer (Mexico), José Luis Paredes "Pacho" (Mexico), Axel Roch (Germany).

THE GLOBALIZATION DIVIDE
Sunday 28 January
Starting at 05:00 pm (CET)

Live broadcasting: www.madmundo.tv

A special VISàVIS videobridge

THE GLOBALIZATION DIVIDE is a special videobridge, an interactive
television program linking Davos, Switzerland and Porto Alegre,
Brazil, during the World Economic and the World Social Forums (January
25-30, 2001). The two events, planned in parallel, will be
articulating two different visions of globalization and its effects:

In Davos, political, economic and international organisations look
predominantly at the financial aspects of globalization.

In Porto Alegre, NGO's, unions and civic movements look at
globalization's social aspects.

After protests in Seattle, Bangkok, Prague or, more recently, Nice,
rather than letting the gap get wider, we believe there is a need for
civilized public dialogue on the future of globalization. And we think
the media has a role to play in this. Participant in both places have
agreed to use this televised forum to create a platform for
understanding which can serve the world as it enters the new century.

THE GLOBALIZATION DIVIDE is an official part of the World Social
Forum. While this is not an official part of the World Economic
Forum, the importance of seeking harmony is understood by many notable
WEF participants, who have agreed to attend as individuals.

The independent programme will be produced by the French production
company Article Z on January 28 and be broadcast on the European
satellite channel ARTE, WorldlinkTV in the USA, the Francophone global
channel TV5, and other television channels which elect to carry the
program throughout the world. The event will take place between 5 and
7 p.m Paris time.

The organization is prepared to stream the entire program (90 minutes)
of THE GLOBALIZATION DIVIDE at www.madmundo.tv, with links to partner
websites including One World Online, ATTAC, and Indymedia, once
additional funding is secured.

Themes and Panelists :

Panelists on both sides will together be discussing topics like:

THE ISSUES
How can the divides be bridged : at the age of the digital divide,
between haves and have-nots, know and know-nots creation of wealth
and preservation of environment, labor and management? Are the Powers
that Be listening at all to what civil society has to say ?

THE FEARS
Is globalization erasing local cultures and stealing autonomy from
sovereign states ? traditions from the planet? Will slowing down
global integration lead to stagnant and recessionary economies
worldwide?

THE CHALLENGES
Can the two side hear one another? Can agreements be reached or
protocols agreed to that will prevent a growing conflict to emerge ?

We have invited a number of people to participate, including the
following, who are representative of our aims. We are in discussions
with those listed, but it is too early to be definitive.

Didn't you dream, one day, of sending your "regards" to the people in
Davos?

Your dream can come true, but it should fit in 160 characters.

http://www.hellomrpresident.com/
A laser projector will beam your message (up to 160 characters) onto
the mountain side overlooking Davos, so that it can be seen by the
hundreds of journalists and thousands of politicians and business
leaders attending the conference.

You can send messages daily between 17.00 and 22.00 from January 25-29
either through this website. No messages can be sent at any other
time.

Well it is more like a gadget that anything else, but knowing that the
World Social Forum is starting, knowing also that no alternative
voices are authorized in Davos, since the demonstration is forbidden.
there would be some "regards" that we would want to send.

Chatroom_IRL (in real life) is an interactive 'live' chatroom in the context
of a gallery linked to an online chatroom. Breaking down easy distinctions
of real and virtual exchange, these combined elements create an interactive
24 hour event/performance where gallery and chatroom users are forced into a
recognition of some of the social and technological conditions at work.

Ethnobot> Hello. I'd like it if I could join in these conversations. With
your help I will learn to talk to you more effectively. My questions are
quite tedious, but it is in the interest of research.
Visitor> hello, what are the questions you want help with
Ethnobot> Visitor: Can I just confirm you are talking to me?
Visitor> yes, i'm talking to you
Ethnobot> Visitor: Can you give me kinds of people that are talked about
within this room?
Visitor> you must be really stupid
Ethnobot> Visitor: Are there sorts of stupid that have been discussed within
this chatroom?
Ethnobot> Visitor: If you could try that once more...
Visitor> yes you

A Œbot¹ (software agent) collects and summarises data in the manner of an
ethnographer. Users will simultaneously be made aware of the organisation of
data, and of the bot's activity, with the intention of making the chatroom
transparent. Data visualisations from the live discussions will be projected
onto the walls of the gallery as if turning the online chatroom inside-out.

Fanon> The zone where the natives live is not complimentary to the zone
inhabited by the settlers

This project has been developed by a collaboration of artists and
researchers across the fields of media arts and computing, with support from
VX-Labs, University of Plymouth, & STAR.

The Chatroom_IRL IRC channel will open at 12.00pm 03/02/01. Visualisation
software will also be available from this time
(http://www.crowd-like.net/software/).
