THE SCHENK REPORT features: **Insightful commentary, generally from the left but sometimes veering off in other directions. Regular contributors include: Walt Brasch, an award-winning reporter and editor who is now a professor of journalism in Pennsylvania. Among his virtues is that his writing is often very funny. Arthur Joel Katz, a retired TV and film executive whose favorite causes include defending the First Amendment and pointing out the insanity of the War on Drugs. Charles Schenk, editor and founder of THE SCHENK REPORT. I have 25 years experience in journalism. My special interests include the Balkans, where I lived and taught English for two years. I reported from the Balkans during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999. (My "Macedonian Diary" pieces are available at THE SCHENK REPORT. From the Front Page, click on The Columnists, then look for "Macedonian Diary.") **There's a big page of Bushisms and a free Bushisms screensaver guaranteed to irk the Republican in the next cubicle. **Another feature is Abortion Watch, a running chronology of the Bush II administration's assault on a woman's right to choose. **THE SCHENK REPORT has lots of links to other writers, most of them on the left, and to dozens of organizations that help to mobilize and inform liberals. **There's a column for letters to the editor, so readers can talk back to us. In other words, if you're not really busy right now, it's worth a click. The address is http://www.SchenkReport.com. Thanks. Sincerely, Charles Schenk Editor, THE SCHENK REPORT P.S. New York, NY 10011 Live webast at http://netart-init.org 7pm EST. On January 26-28, 2001, members of the Verbal Group (new media artists Ricardo Dominguez, G.H. Hovagimyan, Yael Kanarek Tina LaPorta, Diane Ludin, Kevin & Jennifer McCoy, MTAA, Cary Peppermint and curator Jennifer Crowe) hijacked WeLiveInPublic.com, Josh Harris and Tanya Corrin's loft in Soho that is wired to the Internet with 32 cameras. All sounds, events, and actions were broadcast live. Over the weekend, planned and spontaneous interventions into the physical and virtual space occurred. The Verbal Group also engaged in quite a bit of eating, drinking, conversing about online aesthetics, and hang out with each other and the people in WeLiveInPublic.com chat room. Through interventions ranging from morning exercises led by people in the WeLiveInPublic.com chat room, to having simulated cybersex, and presenting performative texts to the "toilet cam", the Verbal Group spent the weekend messing around with and trying to cope with living in the ready-made object/space of WeLiveInPublic.com. Members of the Verbal Group will present this project and talk about its aftermath at Jihui. In the old west of Amsterdam, close to the Leidseplein, the Vondelpark and the national museums on the Museum square, there is a building that stands out: the former Jan Swammerdam Institute. It is a prime example of a modernist, concrete, 1960's institutional architecture that has few rivals in the historic heart of Amsterdam. It has been described as inhuman in scale, even brutalist, and exemplifies the functionalist aesthetic that was so out of fashion for the last twenty-odd years, but which now is making something of a comeback. In Amsterdam many buildings of this kind have been torn down, and the former Jan Swammerdam Institute is destined for the same fate by the Old West district council, in order to make way for new housing and offices. However, SMART Project Space has recently turned the building into its temporary home, creating an exhibition space for contemporary art, artists' studios and a café-restaurant. SMART Project Space Foundation has now developed an alternative plan to preserve the building, and adapt it to offer space to a diversity of cultural initiatives: expanding the exhibition spaces, adding cinema spaces for a programming of art-house cinema, art-cinema and video art, guest-studios for visiting artists, and office spaces for cultural institutions and creative companies. SMART Project Space has secured considerable financial backing for this purpose (amongst others from the Municipal Government of Amsterdam), and is now campaigning for the local district council to amend its plans and allow the building to be preserved. SMART Project Space Foundation has carried out an active exhibition policy in Amsterdam since 1994, aimed at the newest developments in contemporary art. In this context, a program of video art, art-cinema and net art has been presented, as well as film, performances and music and other media as the opportunity arises. Early in 2000 (part of) the former Jan Swammerdam Institute was given as a temporary home to SMART Project Space by Mentrum (the former Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital). It is now housing the exhibition spaces of SMART Project Space, almost 50 artists' studios, a thriving café-restaurant, a film production studio and a screening space. Under the proposals, the building will be refurbished to meet the demands of its new functions, the facade (existing of granito and white marble) will be cleaned up and a (transparent) extension will be added on the ground floor, covering the current car park and bringing the front of the building out to the public road. The plans also include a public passageway to the area of the former Wilhelmina Gasthuis behind the building, creating a new, monumental entrance to this unusual part of Amsterdam. Internally, the plans aim to accommodate the following: Exhibition Space: circa 1000 m2 On the ground floor there will be an exhibition space where the newest developments in contemporary art: film, photography, performances, design, architecture and other art forms will be given a podium. The space offers the possibility of being able to organise different smaller exhibitions at the same time but could also be used for larger exhibitions as the opportunity arises. National and international art institutes will work together on the programming (SMART Project Space reserves 400 m2 for contemporary art exhibitions; 600 m2 will be programmed with exhibitions on the subject of contemporary culture). Film house: circa 900 m2 The three lecture theatres in the building (originally built by the University of Amserdam) will be fitted out as cinemas offering a podium for good quality art-house and experimental cinema. For programming we will work together with the former Desmet Art-house (which was forced to close down recently by the owners of the property) crew and the nearby Dutch Film Museum. Café: ca 250 m2 Also on the ground floor is a café-restaurant, annex media-café: a meeting place for artists and art-enthusiasts. "De Ruimte" is already a phenomenon as meeting place for the cultural circuit in Amsterdam. Artist's studios: circa 3.600 m2 On the first three floors, there is space for around 50 artist's studios. The artists are selected on grounds of their professional level and the quality of the content of their work. Four guest studios will be made available to artists from abroad. Office space: circa 3.600 m2 The top three floors will be made available to cultural institutes and related creative businesses. In order to secure the co-operation of the Old West council it is important to show the level of support that exists for the activities and the plans of SMART Project Space; not just on a local level, but also in the international art circuit. Your declaration of support will show the international interest that will be generated by a cultural space like this. It will present significant current empirical research in progress, together with an emphasis on theoretical and methodological issues. papers and presentations welcomed from, but not limited to:- ! sociology ! psychology ! economics ! geography ! urban studies ! computer science ! design ! HCI fees for postgraduate researchers will be highly subsidized <issues>: Following the practical and symbolic centrality of mobile communications to recent gatherings and mobilisations from Paulsgrove to Prague, this academic mobilisation is round the technological leitmotif of the mobile itself. Mobile communications and convergent technologies, and the actions and performances they facilitate, are continually and rapidly developing and extremely ubiquitous social phenomena. How such technologies and their associated uses and techniques of ‘mobility’ and ‘ubiquity’ might best be understood and critically interrogated is one focus of this workshop. the production of viable mobile technologies for a broad range of user also raises numerous new issues around interactive system design. Social scientists are being placed at a critical juncture where a significant impact can be made on the design of mobile technologies and associated design methodologies, employing the analytical methods and techniques brought to bear on studying behaviour, cognition and social practices. the increase in users and introduction of new technologies and network services has also led to a dramatic change in the economics characterising the mobile telecoms market. Understanding requires consideration of the competition forces which determine the agents’ strategies, together with issues such as number of licenses in granted, interconnection between operators and efficient allocation of the spectrum, which require the presence of an active regulator. <menu>: ! mobile cultures ! ‘the future is…’ ! location, location, location ! mobilities, ubiquities and new social theory ! social exclusion & ICT imperatives ! working and domesticating ! surveillance, hypercoordination and mobilisation ! gender & mobility ! designing mobile technologies ! informing design methodologies ! No matter what they tell you, Internet is man's latest achievement that affected everything. It put an end to the world as we new it. People who entered and experienced it, began developing new ways of thinking, moved the boundaries of the impossible a little bit further and still have no idea where those borders can retreat to... are all these for the best? Or for the worse? One option is that every individual, who, in front of their computer decides what their own attitude will be, will determine this. It is also true that the "contents" or, better said, the virtual places, (also known as websites) that one can find in this huge world, can help forge attitudes by pointing towards certain directions. .netculture was built hoping to become such a place. The difference is that the direction will not be suggested by .netculture itself, but by its visitors/collaborators. A Means To An End... The aim is the creation of a platform that will act as a simulator for people who do not like being receivers. It is meant or those who do not believe that they expand web's interactive capabilities by pointless and endless surfing or chatting. .netculture will maintain this form forever: it will always and only be accessible through a computer or a device that can become a creative tool of expression. It will never be uploaded to a WAP server, you will never see it on TV, conventional or digital or whatever. That being said, we must say that .netculture will not bypass any new technologies that will help it become even more interactive and open to its users. What .netculture will ignore though, will be any technology that in turn ignores man's ability to act. Many forms A very small group created .netculture. We used our digital materials to give it a form. After that we pass it to those populating the web, to do what they like with it. Change it, expand it, shrink it, kill it. We are not planning on making any attempts to maintain it, if no one else does. We are only going to "play" as users every now and then, whenever we have the urge to interact and contribute. Just like any other user. The number of the forms .netculture can assume are not known. In fact that number exceeds by far all its potential visitors. The idea of .netculture is simple. Anyone can collaborate, anytime, as many times as he or she likes. The experts, the professionals and the beginners alike. There will be no judges who will evaluate the material uploaded as long as that material is exploring the networked culture and abides with our manners. The forms .netculture can assume can be forwarded through any creative channel people can imagine as long as the web supports it. It can be writing, imaging, application, design, sound, music, criticism, information, discussion, guidance. This list can expand as the web expands. Anything new we are eager to learn and use, as long as our ability to act and freely express ourselves is ensured. and the end is... What .netculture seeks is an exploration of this newfound digital landscape. A new kind of society is underway and with it, the need of defining it is born. The goal seems non achievable but we might as well try. Shortly before the face of this landscape is forever changed and becomes firmly controlled, we decide to give ourselves a chance to say a few things.
