To continue this online commerative .... I knew him as well - from San Francisco - the 1980s' - Art Com - co-founded with Nancy Frank and embarked upon an early involvement with screening distrubuting " video art " as well as performance and books ... from their original loft space on South Van Ness ( next to SF Camerawork ). I believe that they also published their own book on performance - the title of which escapes me at the moment. He was very much a part of the rather fractious SF scene. From video he soon migrated into computers and technology ( familar scenario ) and was one of the earliest to support and advance the port-a-pak / reel-to reel "purist " sensibility of the '70's. For the most part, the artists that ArtCom distrubuted exemplified that approach to time-based practice, and included Ant Farm, Dara Birnbaum, Jeanne Finley, Doug Hall, Gary Hill, Lynnn Hirshman, Chip Lord, John Sanborn / Kit Fitzgerald, Bill Viola, myself etc. Again, he was one of the earliest proponents to recogonize the potentials of on-line with his association with the WELL. He and Anna Couey, the WELL, et all were also supportive of one of the first online cultural / activist global projects " 69 hours / On-line against AIDS " which took place in 1990 and involved a singularly impressive collective of alternative art spaces, community participants and health care services. As with many non-profits in the US during the early to mid 90's, Art Com was suffering from severe financial problems due to ( among other things) the shrinkage of funding opportunities which engendered the expected results - loss of staff, loss of space+++++. I think that it all proved to be a bit too much at that point . My understanding is that Carl was offered either a research or teaching position at Carnegie Mellon and left SF. I had hear little about him since 1995 /96 execpt that he was doing well at CM.... what he was doing - I'm not at all sure.
