Preamble to the online publication of Love 
is the Law, the Passion of Revolt Feb 14, 
2002: 
The issue of Public that this paper was 
written to concerned The Lovers Discourse. 
Love in its many splendoured complexity was 
treated by Cornell West discussing a condition
 beyond Eurocentrism and Multiculturalism, 
Jody Berland on Weather and Song, Derek 
Jarman, Blue, and even our Sean Cubitt 
with The Love that cant remember its name
.
 Indeed? 
I was at the time allegorising 'Internet as 
publishing'. I was not interested in Internet 
as a problem of computing (best leave that to
 people who know about gizmos, code n stuff),
 nor as an example or instance of cyberculture
 (though I find that all very entertaining,
 and I learned to do it quite well, lol), but 
as a problem of publishing and the public or
 a problem of media and culture, one that 
needed at least one historical comparison if
 only to help understand whether Internet was 
transgressive in the fields of mediation and 
distribution in the way other media were when 
new. Whether it was resistant oppositional
 or  alternative, whether Intenret content 
could be radical in a socially formative 
way. Whether it was media at all. Questions 
like that. Remember this was 1993-4. The WWW I
 had looked at had 1,250 servers all listed by
 domain at http://info.cern.ch. All were in
computer science or information faculties. 
Some were 
Stross
at Edinburgh were playful and had names
that strangely attracted, like Tardis with
homepages by people who called themselves
Timelords.(hmmm...) That was about it for culture and the WWW. I got in touch with 
everyone I thought was doing something 
interesting. It seemed obvious to me 
at the time that WWW was going to be media 
writ Large.
An obvious test of claims to radicalism 
seemed to be whether or not the patterning of 
revolt, and the correspondences of revolution,
 which appear to be in dialogue apparently 
without mediation across the generations, 
appeared in the emergence of Internet in 
culture. I have found that they do. A lot of
 people had/have career investments in me not
 finding this at all. 
But forget all the intention and politico-
historical-alchemy of my project. Boring. This 
paper was written to love, and within the 
dry academic tomes that
discussed the Culture of the English Press 
Pamphlet and the Revolution of the 1640s
in minute micro-historical detail, the 
word love which ran through all of the 
pamphlets as a repetitive refrain as if the 
depth and meaning of the word in all its 
different contexts could never be fully 
grasped, never got a mention in the 
scholarship. Of course, Biblically, Love is 
the Word, but as the radicals of the 1640s 
became more radical, more concerned with the 
material world, love took on a multi-
accented charater. I focussed on pamphlet 
writers who worked with this word love more 
than others. I am not a fan of Wigan, Lancashire, born Gerrard Winstanley. I am 
not a Digger, but probably would have been 
back then, or if too old (remember these
radicals were young people) would have 
approved. In reading the texts of Winstanley, 
Overton, Lillburne and Walwyn, I found that 
they were on to something and their 
contemporaries, men and women, anticipated the
 world as we know it. Gerry
 and his mates invented the social contract, 
liberal humanism, liberty equality fraternity,
 communism, their feminism, and then they all went on to invent a combination of the social and natural contract that is necessary to save 
the world. Their texts lay forgotten for 
hundreds of years, they hardly influenced the 
European Enlightenment project, but they were 
remembered by revolutionaries wherever 
revolution happened from Benjamin Franklin to 
Lenin, from Che to Johnny and Luther. They 
were remembered in Cali in The Farm and in The
 Well. They are remembered in Internet.
The paper was badly edited as far as I was 
concerned and this led to the end of a 
beautiful relationship(1), a section on gender
 and the culture of the press pamphlet, and a 
section of the relevance of mid seventeenth 
century English radical thinking and 
affinities with post-colonialism and fourth 
world studies was edited out. They were great
 sections and I will try to find them and add 
them. They are in another paper less concerned 
about the Word Love called Textual 
Communities: the culture of the English press
 pamphlet 1640-1652.
The idea was to return to the paper seven 
years later and consider the culture of the 
press pamphlet and Internet in culture 
together, which I judged should by that time 
(2001) show radical tendencies outside of 
the Strawberry Fields of fantasy and 
imagination, and impacts on the world at
large. But, of course, the new law as I 
wrote in 1994 will not be written, it will be 
performed, enacted, carried out. I intended 
to write a follow up paper at the end of my 
research. 
I am doing so, working title Love is the Outlaw  not much order in the new world order and will share this with you.
I will post the 3 sections of the paper Love 
is the Law during the coming days. Depending 
on a very wide range of factors not 
necessarily under my control at present. I
 would be interested in other narratives, 
allegories, figurations that people employed 
when they first decided to make projects for 
WWW, and would be interested in whether anyone 
thinks this paper has any correspondence to the
way WWW has emerged in culture.

1. The editor was a partner who was at the 
time obsessed with a section in a letter from 
Jenny v W to Karl Marx of 1838
