With the proliferation of information in today's world, it is remarkable to imagine one being able to focus thought on singular ideas without seeming simplistic, didactic, or dull. As it is, interesting artists around the world are succeeding daily to overcome the challenges of living life on fast-forward. The concern in SPECIFICITY is on subject matter - in how artists are able to address wide ranging, open topics in very particular and pointed ways, all the while not ignoring the crushing reality of informational meta-systems that move us further away from our inner-selves. Strength through knowledge, generosity and grace are but a few words to describe the way these artists transcend the dredge of information that turns all possibility into immobility. What is to be found in this exhibition is clarity addressed and spoken for in the myriad of ways that each one of these artists has chosen. Whether presented as abstract, as conceptual, or through strict and refined codes of beauty, these particular artists have brought their work to a specific place that opens a way to being wholly absorbed, engaged, and focused without limit. As the critic, Denise Carvalho states in the exhibition's catalogue essay: "In a time when our conception of history is not only non-linear and multidimensional but also simulated and sensational, the notion of a movement or a style or a school is certainly obsolete. One might have to accept that the authenticity and rationale of prior histories led to how we envision the art of today. "Specificity" can be interpreted as a universal moment in any history in which artists of similar verve and depth find singularity in aesthetic form. More to the point, specificity can be understood as the moment when artists find the universal language of form within a particular situation, or even the particularity and singularity of an expression and concept within a universally established form. The true art appreciator will also find another expression in works that contain specificity: a language of individuality. Specificity is individuality as the utmost proposition of art. It is through the solidarity of a movement that art makes progress toward changing the world, but it is by finding individuality that art recreates itself. Specificity as an aesthetic mark can be found in the simple integration between form and idea." With Rafi Segal he is working on the redesign of the Ashdod Museum of Art and a set for the Kameri/Itim theatre company. They have been recently nominated amongst the finalists for the design of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Weizman and Segal created the exhibition A Civilian Occupation: The Politics of Israeli Architecture that was recently on view at the Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York. The project examining the politics of settlement was originally commissioned by the Israel Association of United Architects but was cancelled for the World Congress of Architecture in Berlin last July. Weizman has conducted research on behalf of the human rights organization B'tselem on the planning aspects of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. He co-authored Land Grab (May 2002), a human rights report, and conducted a map project of the West Bank for the human rights organization B'Tselem. Weizman is currently developing his doctoral thesis The Politics of Verticality / Architecture and Occupation in the West Bank and Gaza into a book and a documentary film.
