Metabolism and Communication ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe 2003-05-09 Exhibition opening b a n q u e t Metabolism and Communication May 15 – August 24, 2003 Opening: May 14, 7 p.m. b a n q u e t takes human metabolism as the starting point for an investigation of the metabolism of our social and ecological system. The potential of globalization and the politics of information, production and consumption are described as global processes similar to the human body's metabolic processes. In the exhibition, banquet, a term that has, since ancient times, been associated with the idea of a forum for exchange and reflection, highlights the question of the location of food intake and communication. With the establishment of a fast food culture and the invasion by television of the domestic sphere, the table as the location of joint meals and daily conversation is losing its place at the heart of social life. The artists represented in the exhibition reflect critically on this very rejection of a centuries-old form of close-range communication, of the idea of food intake as an act of social communication in favor of long-range methods of communication, e.g., via Internet. b a n q u e t is a joint project organized by Palau de la Virreina in Barcelona, Centro Cultural Conde Duque in Madrid and ZKM Kalrsruhe. Each institution is staging its own independent exhibition, but with a number of joint projects. In Barcelona the exhibition was shown from January – March 2003, in Karlsruhe the exhibition will run from May – August 2003, followed by Madrid (September – November 2003). Subsequently, a joint catalogue will be issued in English and Spanish. Friday, May 16, 7-9pm Artists' Gestures Book Launch featuring live performances and actions by Raphaëlle De Groot, Carl Bouchard & Martin Dufrasne, and Devora Neumark Artists' Gestures Project directors: Marie Fraser, Marie-Josée Lafortune Participating artists: Carl Bouchard + Martin Dufrasne, Rachel Echenberg, Raphaëlle de Groot, Massimo Guerrera, Devora Neumark The publication accompanies the Artists' Gestures exhibition curated by Marie Fraser and Marie-Josée Lafortune and organized by Optica, a contemporary art center, which was presented in Montreal from October 7th to 14th 2001 in conjunction with the Saison du Québec à New York. With text by Moukhtar Kocache, Director of Visual and Media Arts of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and interviews with artists in the exhibition, this catalogue furthers a reflection on the nature of gesture, interrogating its mobility, fragility, transience and motion toward the world. From the self to the other, the gesture travels between two spaces, from the private to the social. Artists' Gestures was originally planned as a series of street actions in various locations in New York City by six Quebec artists initiated by Optica and presented in collaboration with Artists Space and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. In the fall of 2001 the project had to be relocated to Montréal in a few hours notice. The publication focuses on the flexibility of the artists' processes, and critically documents their experiences of adapting their work to new conditions. LMCC is proud to host this launch event in New York featuring actions and performances by Raphaëlle De Groot, Carl Bouchard and Martin Dufrasne, and Devora Neumark as well as commentary by the curators and video footage of the Montreal performances. www.optica.ca Artists' Gestures Optica, Montréal, 2003, 88p. ill. color ISBN 2-922085-08-2 Special launch price $15 Regular price $17 - ---------------------------------------------- Location & Directions Lower Manhattan Cultural Council 1 Wall Street Court 2nd Floor www.lmcc.net 212.210.9401 Subway and Bus Directions: 2/3/4/5 to Wall Street J/M/Z to Broad Street M6 to Broadway and Wall Street Walk eastbound on Wall Street to Pearl Street. L.D. quote - --- Performance 'nanomachine' by Antoine Schmitt (FR), iMAL @ Centre Dansaert, friday 16.5.2003 : friday 16.5.03 , 20h30 : iMAL @ Cafe Toots, Centre Dansaert, 7 rue d'Aloststraat, 1000 Bruxel : 3 EUR :: ENglish then NL [French below] Nanomachine: a rythmic semi-autonomous complex machine. An audiovisual improvisation and performance. A public fight with a minimal 'Gesamtkunstwerk' in development. Nanomachine is the continuation of Antoine Schmitt's visual work in the field of audiovisual performance. Nanoensemble : a set of little detuned visual and musical automatas, which evolve endlessly and autonomously. In-between the individual presence of the objects and sounds, and presence of the ensemble. Each automata has its own behavior and audiovisual shape; they all interact and influence each other to create a complex rythmic machine which is easy to undestand as a whole but at the same time difficult to grasp due to its complexity. The audio signature of the ensemble is a mix of ambiguous rythmic sampling loops, a kind of generalisation of Steve Reich's Pendulum Music. The visual aspect is extremely light and soft. Exemples of such nanoensembles can be seen on line on http://www.gratin.org/as/nanos/ In the Nanomachine performance, Antoine Schmitt improvises a slow construction and dis-construction of many nanoensembles. The construction process is difficult as the machines use to be unstable. As for a musical improvisation, the whole process is open and visible. Nanomachine is a new form of VJ/DJ expression based on real time autonomous programmed systems. The usual pictures and sounds are the audiovisual side effects of some complex underlying processes. Sounds are not following visuals, nor the inverse : they are both originating from the same machine and its many constituting objects. Causality is slightly untuned and always changing (from object to image or sound, from an object to its neighbors, from an object to the overall ensemble) : both sensual perceptions and reasoning of the specatator are constantly triggered and he is moved between reality and abstraction. Frank Stella told : "What you see is what you see". Here the only question for the spectator is what he is feeling. Nanomachine is a public fight with a minimal 'Gesamtkunstwerk' in development. :: about Antoine Schmitt Artist and Programmer, Antoine Schmitt stands at the crossing of abstraction and dynamic simulation. Since 1995, he has been molding software algorithms to create audio and visual objects, in the form of installations, online artworks and performances. Autonomy and abstraction are his research paths, realtime software programming is his tool. Antoine Schmitt hunts down the shape of the being deep inside human nature. Happening underneath langage and meaning, sensation is at the heart of his artworks. more info on http://www.gratin.org/as :: NL Nanomachine. Meer info op http://www.gratin.org/as nanomachine, a laptop performance by Antoine Schmitt (FR) :: FRançais [ENglish & NL below] La nanomachine Une machine rythmique complexe et semi-autonome. From email-to-fax action alerts to geographic information systems (GIS), to the simple speed of email networks, we are now armed with powerful tools that can be used for moving us into a more sustainable future. Amid accelerating global crises, new social and technological forces are converging into a an unique exciting and powerful movement for global change. The growing sense of empowerment of a global citizenry has been made possible largely through the use of the Internet. On February 15th, millions of people world wide spoke out for peace. For the first time we were able to see our numbers and hear our voice - a richly diverse and inclusive spectrum of humanity united by a common vision of a peaceful world, and a just future. Why stop there? How might this empowered global citizenry mobilize around other critical issues effecting our future - natural resource depletion; basic human rights; economic justice? What are the communications strategies needed to galvanize around specific issues, to mobilize our networks, envision alternative solutions, and demand change. How might we use our financial resources, as a networked global citizenry, to bring about system-wide transformation? We have the tools, we have the imagination, and we have the need. It's time to look at how we are using our information technology tools - to bring together practitioners from across the sectors of new media, online community, software development, online activism, independent media production and progressive entrepreneurship to examine critically - and collaboratively - where we are, and what is possible. The latest TERROR=DECOR: ART NOW will take place at the 50. Venice Biennial as the exhibition in the Slovenian Pavilion from June,13 till September, 30 2003. The project questions the aesthetics of the violence of armed utopian movements, which, influenced by the art industry, are transformed into decorative images that can find its way into every surrounding, every single apartment belonging to precisely the same structure of power which the radical utopian movements had once criticized. Topic: we have planned a series of panels in which we are intending to confront the different principles of aesthetics which encourage the commodification of utopian ideologies. The panel will address such issues as the images of violence in mass culture, inherent in genres spanning from documentaries to high concept movies, which pave the way to ideologies of power and which can be recognized in totalitarianisms of the cultural industry/ art market. Panelists: the participants will include former political radicals, political commentators who shape the everyday public opinion and media theoreticians reflecting upon the effects of media manipulation. Participants in Torino: Ziga Kariz, artist, Alberto Franceschini, cofounder of Brigatte Rose, Antonio Caronia, media theoretician, Jurij Krpan, commissioner of Slovenian Pavilion (A+A Gallery) in 50. Venice Biennial, Alessandro Stillo, moderator. The panel in Torino was prepared in collaboration with art space Amantes and Arci, Nuova Asoociazioni Comitato di Torino. Date: three panels are to be organized before the Venice Biennial. The panel in Torino is on May, 12 2003, in Beirut is planned for the second half of May and in New York on May, 28 2003. Issues: the following issues are to be examined: - - the relationship between the preconceived gaze at a painting as an aesthetic surface and gaze of the painting's creator. - - different forms of presentations of terrorists acts (Brigatte Rosse, Hamas, al Qaida), thushighlighting the differences between the archaic and modern categories of terrorist utopias - - the potential application of these images to elite art production - - the fictional representation of violence in Hollywood films and its influence on the attitude towards real violent scenes - - the questionable effects of the commodification of violence in relation to the institutions abusing these effects, including art and politics - - the connection between surveillance which results in greater freedom and surveillance which inhibits it: the problem of conscious waiving of the rights to privacy - - the transcripts/reports of the panels will be included in the catalogue published before the Venice Biennial Kapelica Gallery - Gallery for contemporary investigative arts Kersnikova 4, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenija tel.: +386 1 43 80 302, fax: +386 1 43 80 202, gallery@kapelica.org ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 2003 08:38:35 +0200 From: "Lorenzo Taiuti" <md3169@mclink.it> Subject: "M-MULTIMEDIA" Messaggio in formato MIME composto da piy parti. - ------=_NextPart_000_002B_01C31861.E0570700 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable >From Lorenzo Taiuti md3169@mclink.it "M-Multimedia" serial show about Multimedia languages gives three more = meetings: "M-Multimedia 9: "At Goethe Institut in Turin monday 19 may afternoon hour 17 conference = by Andreas Broeckmann director of Festival Transmediale in Berlin. Álvaro Rey __________________________________________________________ Kepa Landa Coordinador MediaLabMadrid www.medialabmadrid.org www.cibervision.org www.banquete.org T: (34) 91 559 85 21 - 91 588 55 94 Centro Cultural Conde Duque. A real laboratory, Makrolab is equipped to hold artists, scientists and strategic operators of the media world, who are supplied with instruments and means for a common progressive independent work that develops wide-ranging research in the field of telecommunications, climate and migration. The location where the initiative is based is also unusual: Campalto Island in the Venetian lagoon. >From the beginning of June through to the end of September, it will be possible to visit the Makrolab laboratory in full swing, thanks to a ferry service that goes to the island from the Biennale site of the Giardini. This service makes it possible for all those interested to take part directly in the research activities and experiments and, naturally, the results that emerge. Makrolab, started in 1994 by Marko Peljhan, and realised for the first time as part of Documenta X at Kassel in 1997, draws on the collaboration of people from many different studies and disciplines. It is expected to end in 2007, when the structure will be placed permanently in the Antarctic. From then on Makrolab will be managed by a trans-national foundation. The project has already been a feature at Venice, in June 1999 at the Querini Stampalia Foundation and, in February 2001, at the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation as part of the Guggenheim public project. In its three themes (telecommunications, migration and climatic systems) Makrolab has identified a real resource to understand how our planet works on a social, technological and natural level, and how it develops through methods and systems of art, where it finds the notion of liberty, and of science which offer the possibility to progress and reflect. It should be stressed that Makrolab is a social experiment and is run by the non-profit association of Slovenian artists Zavod Projekt Atol. The project is financed by governments, international organisations and societies, and by individuals. After Venice it will be installed in Israel, South Africa, Nunavut Territory in Canada, Japan, Russia and finally the Antarctic (2007) where it will be used as a permanent and independent artistic-scientific station for research in the areas of primary interest to the project. Makrolab is equipped with systems which allow the most comfortable working conditions, despite limitations in space. It has five sections: the working section, kitchen, storage area, rest area and hygiene area. It draws its energy from wind and sun and possesses a system of filters to obtain and recycle drinking water; what's more, it's capable of recycling most of its waste and has a small hydroponic vegetable garden. In the near future perma-cultivations will be installed, which should supplement the nutritional necessities of the team. For extreme conditions the laboratory also has a system to control the internal atmosphere. Makrolab operates an equal opportunities policy and is open to anyone. The present team can be contacted with proposals, suggestions etc., on makrolab@libero.it The majority of results are available to the public on the Internet or other research engines. Makrolab is part of the 50th International Biennale of Art in collaboration with the Comune di Venezia, Assessorato alle Politiche Sociali, Regione Veneto, Interreg III Phare CBS Italia/Slovenia, The Slovenian Ministry of Culture, The City of Ljubljana, Mobitel d.d.
