V2_ invites you to the official Launch of 'Making Art of Databases' and
meet some of the project's participants in an evening of performance and
presentations...
The publication 'Making Art of Databases' is based on four international
master classes, focussing on the language and culture of archives and
databases in the work of electronic media artists, which was a two-year
collaborative project between V2_ and ZKM (D), Ars Electronica (A) and C3
(H). The master class leaders, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer with Brian Massumi,
Joel Ryan, Lev Manovich and Sher Doruff have worked on this theme with
students for a week, each from his or her own perspective (interactivity,
sound, image and interdisciplinarity). The contribution of the masters and
the results of these master classes are compiled into a publication
entitled 'Making Art of Databases'.
Speakers:
Welcome words by Alex Adriaansens, director of V2_.
Sher Doruff talks about the master class 'Collaborative Culture', theme
interdisciplinarity.
Joel Ryan gives a concert of electronic music.
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Brian Massumi, present in following of the master
class 'HUMO - HUge and MObile' live via an on line connection from Montreal
the premiere screening of the (video) documentary by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer.
The online intervention '*Listen, Send, Tell*' will frame the evening,
which is a collaboration of Isabelle Jenniches (in New York), Michelle
Teran (in Rotterdam) and Radiotopia (in Vienna) in which sound triggers
text and image impulses.
The Book Launch will be broadcast live on the website, which offers the

For those interested in the current milieu of experimental electronic music,
the quite fascinating MUTEK festival just finished in Montréal... more than
a festival of music, MUTEK--directed by Alain Mongeau, whom some might
recognise from the ISEA conference held in Montréal in '94, I believe--has
been striving to conceptualize itself as a global node for a virtual
community (along the same lines as the N5M conferences in tactical media and
so on), and this year rather successfully, I think, managed to develop
cultural links between Chile, Germany, and Montréal through an exchange of
producers that has resulted in not only new & invigorating explorations of
electronic audio but ways of remixing the city, especially in the
http://www.mutek.cl version in Valparaiso.

CONTEMPORARY ANTI-WAR MOBILIZATIONS
Agonistic Engagement Within Social Movement Networks
A two day workshop to be held in Corfu, Greece, November 6-7, 2003
The network perspective is often discussed in relation to social movements
and collective action. Key elements of the latter, such as actors,
agencies, organizations, institutions etc. witnessing, participating,
confronting or allying with social movements, can be studied in their
networked entanglements - consensual or conflictual, deliberative or
agonistic - at any level of collective action - local, national or global.
This international workshop seeks to explore a particular form of
contemporary social movements: anti-war mobilizations and peace movements,
increasingly connected with networked forms of collective action in the
era of globalization. In particular, we seek papers addressing one or more
of the following questions:
* How are national, subnational and transnational mobilizations
articulated to each other specially when they put forward distant issues
an in the case of the contemporary anti-war movements?
* What sort of networked patterns or organizational forms emerge from such
movements and how these expanded network structures are configuring or are
configured within broader political processes and global information
flows?
* Do the recent episodes of anti-war collective action cluster in emerging
cycles and waves of protest? Is their diffusion affected by the geographic
scale or on any other underlying heterogeneities?
* What kind of data or/and ethnomethodological work could properly map the
anti-war movement?
* What sort of causal models or agent-based simulations of evolving
dynamic and self-organizing networks could describe the dynamics of these
mobilizations?
* How do policies and politics over anti-war mobilizations relate to each
other? What is the response of the authorities or the state to this type
of contentious action? What is the interaction between anti-war protest
and repression?
* How is globalization connected with the upsurge of global terrorism
together with many other types of violence (state, racial, ethnic,
cultural or gender-based)?
* How do the modern states of emergency and risk society react against the
threads or accidents of network vulnerabilities, failures or collapses?
* Could modern movements as global anti-war protests be viewed as a
particular instance of reflexive remodernization?
* How public deliberation and pluralist democracy can foster inside the
radical agonistics against globalization?
* Can the democratization of science or the idea that 'another science is
possible' be advanced and sustained within these mobilizations?
The Workshop will be organized by Dr Iosif Botetzagias
(iosif_botetzagias@yahoo.co.uk) and Prof Moses Boudourides
(mboudour@upatras.gr), University of Patras, Greece. There are no
registration fees and delegates interested in participating will soon
receive information about hotels in Corfu and traveling within Greece.
Abstracts up to 250 words should be sent by email to one of the organizers
by July 15, 2003.

Recently V2_ co-organized a series of parabolic flights and activities at
the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Star City (RUS). The first
outcomes of the participating artists and scientists of these flights will
be unveiled at a presentation (see ad 1) and a seminar (see ad 2).

Presentations and documentation on the MIR flights to better our
understanding of gravity and other external forces in relation to the body,
the earth and the universe.
Introduction MIR:
- - Alex Adriaansens (NL), director V2_ and Nicola Triscott (GB) director and
founder of The Arts Catalyst, the science-art agency.
- - Prof. Dr. Otto E. Rössler (D), Professor of Theoretical Biochemistry and
Chaos Researcher at the University of Tübingen (D), Distinguished Professor
of the International Institute for Advanced Studies in Systems Research and
Cybernetics (CDN). Prof. Rössler will introduce key aspects of the
physiognomic and perceptual context of micro gravity cultural research.
Presentations:
- - Marcel-lí Antúnez Roca (E), electronic artist, presents the investigative
performances he executed in micro gravity while wearing his ‘exoskeleton’,
an orthopaedic mechanism that enables the digital reading of body
articulations.
- - Kodwo Eshun (GB), journalist and writer specialized in the field of
electronic art and music and Anjalika Sagar (GB), documentary film maker,
present their project 'OTOLITH', a film about a weightless world approached
from different time dimensions including spectacular scenes shot during
their MIR flights.
Performance:
Marcel-lí Antúnez Roca will perform with his newest ‘exoskeleton’ in a
dynamic robotics event inspired by his MIR flights.

There are still some seats available for the seminar about micro gravity.
The experience of altered gravity puts a new emphasis on the position of
the human body with relation to technology. The seminar will focus on
scenarios for such new physical experiences by examining the variable
conditions of gravity and virtual reality. Participants are encouraged to
rethink their own sense of embodiment within mixed realities. The seminar
aims to generate new insights for the next generation of virtual reality
based upon tactile experience and aesthetic perception rather than that of
simulation and the representation of our daily physical environment.

Regarding the Mihrab, an installation by Goil Amornvivat, Tom Morbitzer and Can Tiryaki
June 1-August 17, 2003
Public reception for the artists to be held Thursday, June 5, 6pm-8pm at 90 Orchard Street, corner of Broome
This is the last installation of the yearlong exhibition series, Points of Entry, in the four storefront windows of 97 Orchard Street, a partnership between LMCC and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. The series explores the significance of immigrant communities in New York City, their experiences since 9/11, the issues surrounding new immigration policies, and global realities.
In their site-specific installation, "Regarding the Mihrab", Goil Amornvivat, Tom Morbitzer and Can Tiryaki explore how everyday space can be converted into a sacred site. The artists have created an artificial wall that appears to extend the surface of the building's façade into the Museum's storefront windows, and have carved into it a Mihrab, a Muslim prayer niche that directs the body towards Mecca. The simple form of the Mihrab identifies a space of spiritual growth and healing. In the work, the artists also reference other spaces around the world and on the Lower East Side that have been transformed into diverse spiritual centers.
