<nettime> [zeee call & updates] NETTIME_NORTH_AMERICA

Greetings everyone:

.. & thanks for the flood of responses we have received over the past few weeks.
We are quickly shaping up this event, which is emerging on its own accord as a
convergence of social networks: a trickle of Nettimers and Nettime-stalwarts
appears to be overshadowed by a greater interest from a broader community of
"newer" "new" media arts and tactical media practitioners who "have heard of"
Nettime but thought it dead.[1] We have thus considered subtitling this gathering
"CRITICAL PRACTICE RESUSCITATON" or CPR for short. And yes, this is all in some
humour.

As a condition of acceptance to present their work and partake, the broader
interested world are subscribing to Nettime. So welcome, new Nettimers. This list
is *also* yours.

Those who have besieged us are chomping at the bit and we are letting it / them /
this swarm take control. But those of you with busy schedules and probable
terminal fatigue are not to be outdone: among others, David Garcia & Ted Byfield
will be in attendance (and we thank them greatly) and others are confirming and
have expressed their interest (we don't want to overdo it, so names withheld for
now, although if Nina Czegledy can somehow make it in a record -smashing drive
from Toronto after flying in from Europe on the 29th, she'll be in promised
attendance..). But what is it with the "names" of Nettime anyhow? Don't we all get
"names" in ideal Internet Land? Part of our mission with this event has become to
refocus the spotlight and to increase its horizon until something of the backstage
and the audience and the wings are illuminated. It's a little Brecht, but it's
fun.

Well, enough poetry. An "official call" for an event not less than 27 days away is
below. Get to Montreal anyway you can, and we will accomodate you.

One week from now (approx.) we will announce the programme.

yours,

the ever-growing pulsating Montreal localized Nettime contingent

Upgrade New

repr=E9sentants de chaque n=A6ud. =20 =20 --- [info - english] --- =20 On Tuesday,
May 30th 2006 the Upgrade Montr=E9al will bring together the firs= t North
American gathering of the global mailing list, <nettime>. Since 1995, Nettime has
been a focal point for discussion and criticism of internet culture and art,
technologies and politics, developing an expression of Net culture known as
"net.criticism." In over seven languages, Nettime has served as the testing ground
for numerous texts and artistic works of new media and contemporary theory. In
2006, Nettime celebrates its 11th birthda= y against the backdrop of over a decade
of publications, interventions and debates.=20 =20 Members of the public, artists,
theorists, writers, codemonkeys and the curious are welcome to attend a series of
talks, panels and workshops followed by an evening of music and performance
devoted to Nettime, its members, it works, its pasts and its futures.
International members of Nettime will be in attendance including list moderators.
Nettime is an open list and this event is open to all of the public! =20 <nettime>
is not just a mailing list but an effort to formulate an international, networked
discourse that neither promotes a dominant euphori= a (to sell products) nor
continues the cynical pessimism, spread by journalists and intellectuals in the
'old' media who generalize about 'new' media with no clear understanding of their
communication aspects. We have produced, and will continue to produce books,
readers, and web sites in various languages so an 'immanent' net critique will
circulate both on- and offline. =20 The formation of the Nettime group goes back
to spring 1995. A first meetin= g called <nettime> was organized in June 1995, at
the Venice Bienale, as a part of the Club Berlin event. The list itself took off
in the Fall. A firs= t compilation on paper appeared in January 1996, at the
second Next Five Minutes events (the so-called ZKP series). The list organized its
own conference in Ljubljana in May 1997, called 'The Beauty and the East'. A 55= 6
pages nettime anthology came out in 1999: Readme! Ascii Culture and the Revenge of
Knowledge (Autonomedia: New York (ISBN: 1570270899)). =20 <The Upgrade> is an
international, emerging network of autonomous nodes united by art, technology, and
a commitment to bridging cultural divides. Upgrade Montreal is organised by tobias
c. van Veen, Sophie Le-Phat Ho and Anik Fournier, and over the past two years has
featured diverse events bridging digital culture and the technology arts, from new
media and net-ar= t to electronic music and performance, from an eclectic
political benefit for Critical Art Ensemble to a subzero celebration of Art's
Birthday. The Upgrade Montr=E9al is produced by SAT and collaborates with various
organisations including Studio XX, La Centrale, terminus1525.ca, OBORO and
Hexagram among others. The Upgrade began in 1999 with a regular gathering o= f new
media artists and curators in New York City organised by Yael Kanarek. Upgrade New
York partnered with Eyebeam in 2000, and in 2004 the Upgrade went international
with Vancouver and Montreal joining the network, followe= d by over a dozen
worldwide locations in 2005 (and growing!). The first Upgrade International
Gathering was held September 2005 in NYC at Eyebeam with representatives from each
global node. =20 =3D=3D

[1] (Sometimes I almost believe in digital death, considering the lack of
discussion of anything fleshtime on Nettime to do with its body or rather
em-bodies (tempting to say corps/e, isn't it?). But even that will be a topic of
discussion on May 30th. Watch out Nettime: you might find yourself skinned alive &
transformed in the wetworld by the time this digital gathering is over, facelifted
with a new list offline that overtakes "the list serves" (to sample a phrase from
Ken Werbin))..
