Re: <nettime> nettime: down & up and the need for long-term archiving |
Dear Nettimers, First and foremost: many thanks to everyone for the offers and suggestions, on- and off-list. In retrospect, our description of our infrastructure as brittle was overstated. The issues isn't really technical. Over more than 25 years, nettime has relied on extensive networks of trans-atlantic friendship, and they've served the list amazingly well. For many years now, nettime-l has been run by kein.org, while the server (nettime.org) for the archive and for the other nettime lists (such as nettime-nl) have been run by bitnik.org. We're very happy -- and grateful -- about this. The reason we raise the archiving question has less to do with any breakdown of technical infrastructure than with the fact that the value of the list changes at some point, from a living engagement to something more historical. The earlier model is sustained by day-to-day attention and care, but this later model needs a more institutional kind of care. But we should note that this isn't a synchronous process; for some, the 'nettime' project ceased to be interesting long ago, while for others its currently of interest or they see it as in a lull and it could become interesting again in the future. So when we speak about looking for an archival solution, we're thinking about something that has a reasonable chance of lasting, let's say arbitrarily, 25 years past the last 'nettimer' stops caring. All the best.
