Subject: Greek Internet Users Strike Against OTE Rise in Phone Calls

ATHENS (Jan. 14) XINHUA - Greece's Internet users Thursday staged a
24-hour boycott of the web in protest against the plans by the
state-run Hellenic Telecommunication Organization (OTE) to increase
local phone call charges.

This is the first such mass protest in Greece. The Internet users
sent protest letters via e-mail and fax to the Greek Prime
Minister's office, OTE and the Greek Parliament.

It was reported that OTE's new tariff systems would raise the cost of
local phone calls by up to 72 percent, making the use of the Internet
a financial burden for most of its users.

Currently, Greece has about 40,000 to 50,000 Internet users.
