The Virtual Beret Project has been an Internet artwork since 1994,
created by artist Sarah Smiley. It asks that you invent an artist,
describe the artwork of the artist, and describe the artists' beret. You
can visit the web site at http://www.ariel.com.au/VirtualBeret/ to see a
few examples. The Virtual Beret welcomes video and animation submissions
as well. Selected submissions will be screened on 8 area cable access
stations during the Boston Cyberarts Festival, May 1-15, 1999. You can

We often assume that all things digital belong to the latter
decade of the 20th century but the history of our creative involvement
with technology can be traced back to a much earlier point in time.
In this event, Pete Gomes, one of the new champions of early
computer film talks to Evelyn Wilson about the relevance of this
early work to his own and others digital projects.
This will be followed by screenings of 'cybernetic cinema'
and computer films from the 1960's - offering a rare opportunity
to see some of the most experimental and highly visionary
work from the period.

VRML-ART in Paderborn
VRML-ART is a juried selection of 3-dimensional worlds, objects, and
avatars,
presented from Feb 23 to 26 , 1999, at the Siemens-Nixdorf-Museum in
Paderborn, Germany. Projects of more than 60 artists and designers have
been selected from 113 submissions, sent from countries around the
world.
Besides professional and semi-professional works, selected projects by
students will also be shown. The exhibition is an important advance in
the
medium that amplifies the artistic output of 3D art and 3D design on
the
internet, and brings attention to VRML-ART in the context of
professional
discussions about the future of 3D digital imaging
This exhibition is evidence of the newest inspirations of 3D virtual
worlds, and
shows the wide spectrum of application possibilities, as seen in social
and
communication chat applications, and in thematic sites with city
information
systems, scientific visualizations, and health education, as well as in
artistic text based theory projects, abstract sculptures and forms,
sound based
spaces, and poetic hyper-structures. Furthermore, we would like to
emphasize
that the artists and designers are still submitting works, and in the
future,
expanded categories including room installations and performances, in
the
context of virtual reality, could be shown and presented.
The exhibition VRML-ART is, until now, the biggest collection of three
dimensional work ever assembled. Works by participants from twenty-four
countries include Armenia, Austria, Canada, China, Croatia, Finland,
France,
Germany, England, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Macedonia, Netherlands, New
Zealand, Portugal, the USA, Switzerland, Romania, Russia, Quebec, Czech
Republic, Belgium, and Wales are represented. For the first time an
international forum of such a type - the VRML-ART show joins together
commercial ideas and artistic concepts, and provides a platform for it.
The 3D Web Art Expo

>From Feb. 23, 1999, the VRML-ART selection is launched on the Internet,
under
the address: www.vrml.org. The 3D Web Art Expo will remain online for
future
projects, which will be announced, commissioned, and linked. The
importance
of www.vrml.org is to focus on the present situation of 3D work, and
will
underscore the importance of the development of this area of work. The
site
will become a place on the internet where interested and competent
people will
be able to show their work and exchange know-how and information, and
where selected artists projects will be shown.
Because of the diverse techniques employed to create 3D, evidenced by
the
diverse platforms that were submitted to the first show of VRML-ART,
other 3D
technologies will be found in this selection. In order to see the sites

would like to point out that it is absolutely necessary and important to
know
which Internet browser (Netscape or Explorer) and which version (3.1, up
to
4.5,
etc.), which specific software (Cosmo, Intervista, Blaxxun, Sony or
other) and
with which hardware (MAC, PC or SGI) each work is created, in order to
see it
properly.
