<nettime> revolution in the air |
There's revolution in the air... Less than a year ago, we held a cocktail party in a bar in London to bring together people, ideas and money in new media. It was too loud, too smoky and too crowded -- but, somehow, it caught a moment. Friendships were forged; deals were done; business cards were exchanged; and emails were sent out inviting friends (and friend of friends) to the next First Tuesday. The meme spread. On Tuesday September 7th, First Tuesday events will be happening across Europe, and the world: Paris, Oslo, Madrid, Budapest, Dublin, Munich, Sydney... Some will be small. Some will be big. They will be whatever a local band of activists can create on the strength of enthusiasm, intelligence and a deep conviction that -- thanks to the Internet, the new economy or whatever it may be -- the world is suddenly filled with overwhelming opportunity. [1] First Tuesday events in 15 cities on September 7th [2] Meanwhile, back in London John Hunt of Obongo kicks off a busy month [3] First Tuesday thanks [4] First Tuesday forums [5] The Webbys come to Europe (http://www.webbys.com) [6] The full details of everything, everywhere [1] First Tuesday events in 15 cities on September 7th Most of Europe will be schmoozing on Tuesday night. First Tuesday events will be taking place in London, Paris, Dublin, Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Madrid, Zurich, Geneva, Budapest, Vienna, Sydney, Edinburgh, Copenhagen and Manchester... Speakers include: Laurent Massa of Xoom.com in Paris, Jon von Tetzchner of Opera Software in Oslo, Colm Grealy of Ireland OnLine in Dublin and Thomas Howells of ABN-AMRO Capital in Budapest. (full details of local events and organisers at the bottom of this email). If you know someone who should be joining the action, ask them to visit our Web site, www.firsttuesday.co.uk and sign up for the groups nearest them. Also remember that more groups -- like Tel Aviv, Prague, Brussels, Berlin, Tallinn and Moscow -- will be starting up later in the year. If there's no group where you are, help us start one. Our network is going global. [2] Meanwhile, back in London Refreshed from our vacations, not to mention August's garden party at Home House, we're back to networking as usual -- and a full calendar of September events. If it's Tuesday, something's shaking here. ** Tuesday September 7th First Tuesday you -- and John Hunt of Obongo and Syzygy 6.30pm--9.00pm [Location and other details in the confirmation note] While his first Internet venture -- ecommerce consultancy Syzygy -- was primarily European, John's latest company, Obongo, is global from the get-go. Founded in London and San Francisco, it will provide a new breed of personalised services to Web surfers and ecommerce sites. John will talk about his experiences in creating a start-up multinational, his vision of the future of the Web and his impressions of business and life in the Valley. To attend, please send an email to ft7sept-rsvp@poplar.com (mailto:ft7sept-rsvp@poplar.com). Those who have already sent email to firsttuesdayseptember@egroups.com will be considered to have RSVPed. We have 300 places for the event on 7 September. If you don't get in, hopefully your disappointment will be appeased by the fact that we're running several events in September ** Tuesday September 14th Second Tuesday you -- and Jerome Mol, founder of Tornado Insider 6.30pm--9.00pm [Location and other details in the confirmation note] Jerome sold his software company, Prolin, to Hewlett Packard and founded Tornado Insider in Amsterdam. Part magazine, part social movement, Tornado Insider chronicles, cheerleads, promotes and generally stirs up entrepreneurship across Europe. Jerome will be talking about his experiences in founding Tornado Insider and his views about the sudden outbreak of start-ups across Europe. To attend, please send an email to ft14sept-rsvp@poplar.com (mailto:ft14sept-rsvp@poplar.com). Please note that if there is a squeeze on space, those who attended the earlier event will go to the back of the virtual queue. ** Tuesday September 21st Third Tuesday you -- Simon Whan and Luke Anderson of e9c 6.30pm--9.00pm [Location and other details in the confirmation note] Simon and Luke run e9c, a recruitment agency specialising in finding talent for fast-growing new media companies. They will talk about how build a great career in start-ups, and how to ensure that the people working for you have great careers. To attend, please send an email to ft21sept-rsvp@poplar.com (mailto:ft21sept-rsvp@poplar.com). Please note that if there is a squeeze on space, those who attended an earlier event will go to the back of the virtual queue. ** Tuesday September 28th Fourth Tuesday you -- and Quention Solt of Berwin Leighton 6.30pm--9.00pm [Location and other details in the confirmation note] Quentin will talk about some of the legal aspects of building a new media business (details to come in a further email). To attend, please send an email to ft28sept-rsvp@poplar.com (mailto:ft28sept-rsvp@poplar.com). Please note that if there is a squeeze on space, those who attended an earlier event will go to the back of the virtual queue. [3] First Tuesday thanks The bigger we get, the more we depend on the support of others. Huge thank-yous to our sponsors, who provide the foundation for our efforts to build the new media community in London: * McKinsey & Co (www.mckinsey.com) * AOL Europe (www.aol.com) * NewMedia Investors (www.newmediainvest.com) * Berwin Leighton (www.berwinleighton.com) * Atlas Venture (www.atlasventure.com) Those who have helped in the past, to whom we're still grateful, include Lehman Brothers and Olswang. [4] First Tuesday forums The First Tuesday discussion forum has proved such a success at putting entrepreneurs together with money that the sheer weight of dealmaking threatened to overwhelm discussion of other topics. So, just as we did with recruitment and jobs a couple of months ago, we've spun off money into its own mailing list. There are now three discussion lists. * firsttuesdayforum@egroups.com is for entrepreneurs seeking discussion and advice on the problems and opportunities of creating a new media business -- from VAT accounting in borderless markets (where the forum offered opinions from Berwin Leighton and other top London legal firms) to financing strategies and industry gossip. Subscribe by sending email to firsttuesdayforum-subscribe@egroups.com * firsttuesdayjobs@egroups.com is for those seeking jobs or talent. Subscribe by sending email to firsttuesdayjobs-subscribe@egroups.com * firsttuesdaymoney is for those seeking or offering finance. Subscribe by sending email to firsttuesdaymoney-subscribe@egroups.com [5] The Webbys come to Europe (http://www.webbys.com) "Forget the Oscars, here comes the Webbys" - New York Times For the last four years the Webbys, based in San Francisco, have held annual awards for all that's good on the internet covering a wide range of categories. Their eclectic academy of judges ranges from industry heavyweights such as Esther Dyson to popular stars such as David Bowie. Recognising the speed with which Europe is now developing, the Webbys are seeking to include sites from the other side of the pond. And they naturally turned to First Tuesday to scout. The submission deadline for the next awards is 16th September. We will be distributing application forms at First Tuesday September, so please ask any of us if you want to give it a shot. [6] The full details of everything, everywhere Here is a complete (well, pretty much complete) list of all of the First Tuesday events being held in September. We toast all of the organisers who are taking First Tuesday, and we hope that, whereever you are next Tuesday night you'll join us in raising a glass -- first to the European organisers, and then to yourselves. We're all in this together.
