[Nettime-nl] vergelijkend warenonderzoek: Endemol's Big Brother & Shakespeare'sThe Taming of the Shrew |
Please note details of the forthcoming seminar being presented by John Hartley on 1 August 2003. CREATIVE INDUSTRIES RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS CENTRE (CIRAC) Friday 1st August, 2003 from 12.00noon to 2.00pm V714, GP 'KISS ME KAT': SHAKESPEARE, BIG BROTHER, AND THE TAMING OF THE SELF. PRESENTER: John Hartley: Throughout his 25-year career, John Hartley has been at the forefront of cultural, media and journalism studies. He pioneered the study of contemporary television, journalism and popular culture from a cultural and communication perspective, and has authored and co-authored more than a dozen books in these areas. His works have been translated into ten languages. Abstract: This paper is about the democratisation of playing. The performance of the self is now done by citizens for themselves and for each other, not by actors. The source of meaning is now located in the consumer, not the producer. The creation of meaning is now an editorial or 'redactional' act, not an authorial one. Big Brother is a latter day version of Shakespeare. The paper: * compares Endemol's Big Brother with Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew; * analyses the character and reception of Katrina Miani from Big Brother; * indicates some long term trends that can be observed in the differences between Shakespeare's Katharina and BB's Kat. 'Kiss me Kat' is due for publication later this year in a book on reality TV: Startling! Heartbreaking! Real! Reality TV and the Re-making of Television Culture, edited by Susan Murray (NYU) and Laurie Ouellette (Rutgers), New York University Press.
