Now What? Dreaming a better world in six parts

'Now What?.' is een breed opgezet project dat bestaat uit zes op zichzelf staande delen die (op de publicaties na) gelijktijdig zullen plaatsvinden op verschillende locaties in de stad Utrecht. Ieder deel onderzoekt vanuit een eigen perspectief het politieke potentieel van dromen en heeft een eigen vorm. Er staan een tweetal tentoonstellingen, een tweetal publicaties, een gesprekkenreeks en een performance op het programma. 

BAK, basis voor actuele kunst vormt het fundament waarop elk onderdeel van dit project zich ontwikkelt. 'Now What?.' is tot stand gekomen door experimentele samenwerking met circa vijftig uitgenodigde kunstenaars, curatoren, en andere partners uit verschillende disciplines.

De tentoonstelling onderzoekt hoop in de betekenis van dreaming forward (voorwaarts dromen). De werken in de tentoonstelling zoeken naar mogelijkheden voor bevrijding uit de huidige situatie en richten zich op de mogelijkheden de toekomst anders voor te stellen. Anderzijds wijst de tentoonstelling op de worsteling die ontstaat zodra de gevaarlijke kant van hoop in het spel komt en ze geclaimd wordt door manipulatieve ideologieën en dubieuze beloften.

In deze tentoonstelling wordt het produceren van fantasieën beschouwd als een uiting van innerlijk leven in haar productieve en visionaire eigenschappen, en wordt onderzocht hoe fantasieën de werkelijkheid kunnen beïnvloeden.

Voor deze performance naar James Lee Byars ('World Question Center', 1969) hebben de kunstenaars, curatoren en alle andere deelnemers aan 'Now What?.' gezamenlijk een lijst opgesteld van brilliant minds uit onze tijd. Tijdens een openbare performance zal contact worden opgenomen met deze personen en wordt hen verzocht vragen te formuleren die zicht bieden op de huidige staat van kennis over en betrokkenheid bij de wereld.

In de krant worden de culturele en sociale implicaties van dromen en hun potentie vanuit het perspectief van projectie onderzocht. Projectie heeft betrekking op de innerlijke processen van dromen, fantaseren en verbeelden, maar impliceert ook direct een naar buiten brengen, rationalisering en visualisering - een projectie in de wereld.

Gerealiseerd in samenwerking met Piet Zwart Instituut en European Cultural Foundation.

'Now What? Dreaming a better world in six parts' is a project with a multi-faceted format consisting of six autonomous parts taking place simultaneously (except for the publications) at various locations in the city of Utrecht, the Netherlands. 

'Now What?.' explores the political potential of dreaming and imagination. Each of the six parts investigates these issues from a particular perspective, and takes different forms, such as exhibitions, performances, and conversations. The project includes the publication of a newspaper and a book of artists' writings.

BAK, basis voor actuele kunst provides a base from which each part of the project unfolds through the experimental collaboration of around fifty invited artists, curators, and partners from other disciplines. 

part one
On Hope and Other Misunderstandings

The exhibition looks at the notion of hope as dreaming forward. The works in the exhibition search for ways of emancipating ourselves from the current situation, and point towards the imaginary potentialities for tomorrow. On the other hand, the exhibition also explores the struggle of encountering the side of hope readily claimed by manipulative ideologies and dubious promisses.

In order to revisit Byars' performance 'World Question Center' (1969) today, the artists, curators and all the other participants in 'Now What?.' have collectively created a list of brilliant minds of our time. In a public performance these individuals are contacted and asked to pose questions through which to grasp the current state of knowledge and concerns about the world.

The Projection

The paper explores the cultural and social implications and potential of dreaming from the perspective of projection. Projection involves the internal processes of dreaming, fantasizing and imagining, but also immediately implies an act of externalization and visualization - a projection into the world.
