1. Creative Learning / Media-gebaseerd verhalen vertellen
'De levens van onze kinderen worden gevormd door wat ze horen en zien in de media', betoogde Neil Postman in 'The Disappearance of Childhood' (1994). Een manier om kinderen te leren omgaan met hun ervaringen, is door ze verhalen te laten componeren met gebruikmaking van diezelfde media. In samenwerking met Teleac/NOT werkt Waag Society aan een lesprogramma in het kader van de televisielesreeks 'Digitaal Vertellen'. Leerlingen uit het VMBO en de basisvorming produceren in dit project gedurende een intensief lesprogramma van vijf weken, korte, verhalende films. Waag Society voert de lessen uit in samenwerking met de Educatieve Faculteit Amsterdam. Eind 2003 worden pilots uitgevoerd op het Montessori College Oost en het Montessori Lyceum Amsterdam. Het vervolgtraject van 8 lessenseries, begint in 2004.

2. Creative Learning / College in de Waag
Veertig studenten van het Institute for Media en RE/Presentation van de Universiteit Utrecht wonen op 9 december een presentatie bij in de Waag als onderdeel van het lesprogramma 'Het actuele debat in de nieuwe media en digitale cultuur'. Er zal met name worden ingaan op ScratchWorx VJ/DJ lessen voor het vmbo, en de Gouden @penstaart, de jaarlijkse prijs voor beste kindermultimedia.

3.Creative Futures Amsterdam
Recentelijk zijn in Amsterdam enkele initiatieven ontplooid om de Creatieve Industrie in kaart te brengen en te stimuleren. Waag Society organiseert samen met het Forum of the Creative Industries (FOCI) uit het Verenigd Koninkijk,een seminar waarin gesproken zal worden over nieuwe Creatieve Locations als Mediapakhuis De Zwijger en de SHELL toren in Amsterdam Noord, mogelijkheden voor Creatieve Connections als via de Amsterdamse kabeltv en webmedia, en de opleiding van Creatieve Professionals. Aan het seminar wordt deelgenomen door 35 vertegenwoordigers van de Creative Industries uit Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Creative Futures komt tot stand met ondersteuning van Imagine IC, de Westergasfabriek, en de gemeente Amsterdam. Een verslag van de bijeenkomst zal begin 2004 als pdf op de website van Waag Society worden aangeboden.

4. Public Research / World Summit on the Information Society
Van 10 t/m 12 december 2003 houden de Verenigde Naties in Geneve de World Summit on the Information Society. Deze wereldtop stelt zich ten doel  regels op te stellen voor de wereldwijde informatiemaatschappij. Zowel de ontwikkelingslanden landen als ook de in het proces betrokken NGO's zagen in de WSIS mogelijkheden om tot wereldwijde afspraken te komen voor de inzet van ICT  om de economische achterstand van ontwikkelingslanden in te lopen. Het is inmiddels duidelijk dat de geďndustrialiseerde landen niet bereid zijn om hierover harde afspraken te maken. Verwacht wordt dat de westerse landen de bijeenkomst vooral zullen gebruiken om de voor hun voordelige regelingen rondom intellectuele eigendomsrechten aan te scherpen en om hun controlemogelijkheden binnen het digitale domein uit te breiden.
Waag Society gaat naar Geneve om deze ontwikkelingen te verslaan en om haar visie voor succesvolle samenwerking binnen elektronische netwerken (zoals de Sarai -Waag Exchange) onder de aandacht te brengen van de vele vertegenwoordigers van initiatieven en organisaties uit de hele wereld. In januari organiseert Waag Society een debriefing over de resultaten van de WSIS. Meer informatie hierover volgt in het volgende nieuwsbrief.

5. Interfacing Access / Gemeentearchief koopt cd-rom Amsterdam Realtime
De eerste digitale archief-aankoop van het Gemeentearchief Amsterdam, betreft een cd-rom van het project Amsterdam Realtime. Dit project van Waag Society in samenwerking met Esther Polak en Jeroen Kee, werd eind 2002 uitgevoerd als onderdeel van de tentoonstelling 'Kaarten van Amsterdam 1866 - 2000'. De cd-rom bevat in een Nederlandse en Engelse beschrijving van het project en van de gebruikte GPRS technologie. Daarnaast wordt, aan de hand van unieke foto's, een impressie gegeven van de bezoekerservaring in de tentoonstellingsruimte. In een interactief gedeelte is een samenvatting te volgen van de sporen die de deelnemers door de stad trokken. De gebruiker kan individuele sporen 'nalopen', en krijgt informatie over leeftijd en beroep van de deelnemer van wie het spoor wordt opgevraagd.
Bezoekers van het Archief kunnen de cd-rom vanaf maart 2004 raadplegen in de studiezaal.

6. Sensing Presence/ Archief Sentient Creatures Lectures online
Alle lezingen uit de serie over robotica, bewustzijn en communicatie, die plaatshad in oktober en november 2003, kunnen worden bekeken op de website van het project. Over het gevoel te worden aangestaard, Cybersculpturen en emotionele computers.

1. Creative Learning / Media-based storytelling
'The lives of our children are shaped by what they hear and see in the media', Neil Postman argued in 'The Disappearance of Childhood' (1994). A way to teach children how to deal with their experiences, is to let them make stories using these same media. Waag Society has set up a programme of lessons together with Dutch broadcasting corporation Teleac/NOT in the context of the television series 'Digital Storytelling'. Pupils from technical and vocational training and the first two groups of secondary education, are taught how to produce short films during an intensive five-week course. Waag Society leads the classes together with students of the Educational College Amsterdam. At the end of 2003 pilots are done at the Montessori College East and the Montessori Grammar School Amsterdam. The follow-up consists of eight lesson series and starts in 2004.

2. Creative Learning / University Class at the Waag
Forty students of the Institute for Media and RE/Presentation at Utrecht University will attend a special university class at the Waag as part of the course 'The contemporary debate in new media and digital culture'. The main subjects are ScratchWorx DJ/VJ lessons for pupils of technical and vocational training and the Golden @, the yearly award for the best multimedia for children.

3. Creative Futures Amsterdam
In Amsterdam a number of initiatives have recently been taken to map and stimulate the Creative Industries. Waag Society and the British Forum of the Creative Industries (FOCI) organise a two-day seminar with talks on new Creative Locations such as Media Warehouse De Zwijger and the SHELL tower in North Amsterdam, possibilities for Creative Connections such as via the Amsterdam cable television and web media, and the teaching of Creative Professionals. The seminar will be attended by 35 representatives of the Creative Industries from the Netherlands and Britain. Creative Futures is supported by Imagine IC, the Westergasfabriek and the Amsterdam city council. A report of the seminar will become available in PDF format at the start of 2004. 

4. PR / Waag Society at Genevan World Summit
 From 10 to 12 December the United Nations will convene in Geneva at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). The summit aims to draft rules for the worldwide information society. Development countries as well as NGOs involved in the process hoped that the WSIS would offer opportunities to come to worldwide arrangements for using ICT as a means to decrease the economic deprivation of development countries. Before the start of the summit however, it has become clear that the industrialised countries are not prepared to agree on a plan or to make funds available. The western countries are expected to use the meeting for a further tightening of intellectual property rights regulations that are beneficial to themselves, and to enhance their means of control of the digital domain. 

Waag Society will be attending the Geneva summit to report on these developments and to bring its views on successful cooperation in electronic networks (like the Sarai Waag Society Exchange) to the attention of the many representatives of initiatives and organisations the world over. In January a debriefing meeting will be organised at Waag Society on the summit's results. More information on this will follow in the next newsletter.

5. Interfacing Access / Municipal Archive acquires cd-rom Amsterdam Realtime
The first digital archive acquirement of the Amsterdam Municipal Archives concerns a cd-rom of the Amsterdam Realtime project. This project of Waag Society in cooperation with artists Esther Polak and Jeroen Kee, was produced at the end of 2002 as part of the exhibition 'Amsterdam Maps 1866 2000'. The cd-rom features a project description (also in English) and an explanation of the GPRS technology that was used. On the basis of unique photo material an impression is created of the visitors' experience of the exhibition. A visual summary of the traces of the participants in the project throughout Amsterdam can be viewed from the interactive part of the cd-rom. Users can view individual traces, and are given additional information on age and profession of the participant. Visitors of the Archive can have a look at the cd-rom in the reading room from March 2004. 

6. Sensing Presence/ Archive Sentient Creatures Lectures on line
All lectures from the series on robotics, consciousness and communication that took place in October and November 2003 can be viewed on the website of the project. On the sense of being stared at, Cybersculpture and emotional computers.
