Een Avond van Filmvertoningen, georganiseerd door Marta Kuzma en Hito Steyerl @W139 Amsterdam.

WAAR: Tentoonstellingsruimte W139, in de kelders van Post CS (onder Stedelijk Museum CS en Club 11), Oosterdokskade 5, 1011 AD Amsterdam. Gebruik de hoofdingang van het gebouw en ga daarna links de trap af.

Op 2 november, ter gelegenheid van de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen, presenteert W139 een avond van filmvertoningen, V IS FOR VICTORY and Other Tales of Change. De gepresenteerde werken, die tegelijkertijd worden geprojecteerd met de binnenkomende resultaten van de huidige verkiezing, belichten periodes van omwenteling en overgang in Algerije, Duitsland, Portugal, Roemenië, de Verenigde Staten en Uruguay.
De avond geeft een overzicht van films die zich bezighouden met politieke en sociale strategieën als manipulatieve dwangtechnieken, en met de rol van de media in de vorming van de publieke opinie. Verder wordt ingegaan op de rol van het individu in het bewerkstelligen van maatschappelijke veranderingen. Deze voorbeelden uit de historiografie van de film bewijzen het vermogen van het medium om de complexiteit weer te geven die schuilgaat achter wat als revolutie of vrede wordt geïnterpreteerd.

An Evening of Screenings organised by Marta Kuzma and Hito Steyerl @W139 Amsterdam.

On the occasion of the U.S. Presidential elections, W139 presents an evening of screenings, V IS FOR VICTORY and Other Tales of Change. Projected in tandem with a simultaneous transmission of the incoming results from the electoral vote, works produced by both artists and directors shed light on periods of revolution and transition in Algeria, Germany, Portugal, Romania, the United States and Uruguay. 
The evening provides an overview of films that reflect on political and social strategies as manipulative techniques of coercion and on the role of the media in shaping public opinion, as well as offering a consideration of the individual as an effective agent for change. These examples from the historiography of film record how the medium can convey the complexities behind what is interpreted as revolution or peace.
