Beste lezer

Door het onregelmatige verschijnen van deze 
nieuwsbrief ben je misschien verstoken geweest 
van informatie over de evenementen waar Barooni 
of Roland Spekle betrokken bij zijn geweest in de 
afgelopen maanden.
Spectaculair was het verschijnen van de 
voorstelling 'Interface Band: gedoe of gedaan' 
van Eboman, niet in het minst door de nieuwe, 
zelfgebouwde sensor-instrumenten die real time 
geluids- en beeldmanipulatie mogelijk maken en 
aan welke twee jaar is gewerkt.
Ook prachtig om te zien, was STEIM's Touch 
Tentoonstelling en 'Ensemble', en de workshops 
die Michel Waisvisz en Kristina Andersen aan 
kinderen gaven, onderdeel van de serie 
'Avontuurlijke Muziek in Leidsche Rijn' van 
Barooni. In hun spel met de aanraakbare, 
elektronische geluidsobjecten en met sensoren 
behangen kledingstukken toonden de kinderen een 
ongeremdheid, die hen tot de beste testpiloten 
voor digitale geluidsobjecten maken.
'Radioscape' van Edwin van der Heide, waarin 
bezoekers op basis van geluiden door de stad 
kunnen navigeren, opgevangen met speciaal 
ontwikkelde radiozenders en -ontvangers, was te 
zien in de Interzone serie van de Balie en 
onderdeel van het Transito festival.
Erg blij was ik met de recensie van 'The Night of 
the Unexpected' in de novembereditie van het 
Engelse tijdschrift The Wire.
Ik wens je veel plezier met de vele, prikkelende 
voorstellingen in de komende maanden.

Robert Ashley 'Lectures to be Sung' en gesprek
Zaterdag 13 november 20.30 uur

Robert Ashley is een pionier in de hedendaagse 
muziek en heeft een uniek idioom ontwikkelt, die 
hijzelf omschrijft als Amerikaanse televisie 
opera's. Met vernieuwende, op tekst gebaseerde 
werken, die vaak een wisselwerking met 
elektronica aangingen, creëerde Ashley een unieke 
stijl. Hij maakte vele grensverleggende werken, 
waarin zijn hypnotiserende stem een hoofdrol 
speelt. In mijn persoonlijke beleving zijn 
"Automatic Writing" (1979) en "Perfect Lives" 
(1978-1980) fenomenale, eigenzinnige documenten.

The Buffer Zone is een audiovisueel werk dat de 
grenzen van de scheiding opzoekt. Het werk is 
geïnspireerd op een door de VN gecontroleerde, 
gedemilitariseerde zone in Cyprus, die dwars door 
het eiland loopt en de bevolking in tweeën 
splitst.
In de performance, een Huis aan de 
Werf-productie, is het publiek en de ruimte 
opgedeeld in twee delen door videoschermen. Aan 
elke kant is er een muzikant (piano en cello), 
die een denkbeeldig duet speelt met een virtueel 
instrument aan de andere zijde. De hoofdpersoon 
is een VN-soldaat (zanger/acteur), die de Buffer 
Zone bewaakt en zich er vrij kan bewegen.
De Buffer Zone laat de belevingswereld van de 
VN-soldaat zien in de opgedeelde theaterruimte. 
De soldaat moet in het reine zien te komen met 
zijn verveling, zijn onthechting en verplaatsing 
naar een desolaat niemandsland, waar zijn 
voornaamste taak het wegsturen van verdwaalde 
mensen is.

Eboman 'DVJ'
Donderdag 19 november, 13.30 uur
Kunsthuis 13, Kastanjelaan 13, Velp
In zijn DVJ programma neemt Eboman MTV-clips van 
sterren als Madonna, Alicia Keys en Missy Elliott 
als basis. Zijn herbewerkingen van zowel het 
beeld als de muziek zijn fenomenale statements, 
waarin hij uit bestaand en overbekend materiaal 
geheel nieuwe audiovisuele composities maakt. 
Maar ook maakt hij duidelijk dat zijn voor 100% 
gesamplede werken autonome Eboman composities 
zijn. Eboman brengt digitale samplekunst op de 
dansvloer.

Gameboyzz Orchestra en Florentintin
Zondag 21 november, 20.30 uur
STEIM, Utrechtsedwarsstraat 134, Amsterdam
Het Gameboyzz Orchestra uit Polen is een 
experimenteel geluid- en beeld project, dat de 
Gameboy console gebruikt om muziek mee te maken. 
Florentintin, ofwel Florentijn Boddendijk, maakt 
'plunderphonic' collages op basis van samples van 
jazz-standards, die hij lapbop noemt.

Huisbezoek, onder leiding van Daniel Cross
Zondag 28 november, 13.00-17.00 uur
Duurzaam Huis, Johanitterpad 1, Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht
Barooni presenteert 'Huisbezoek', een muzikaal 
Huiskamer Event waarin de bewoners en hun 
verhalen centraal staan; hun leven, hun reizen, 
hun cultuur, liefdes en gektes. In kleine 
groepjes wandelt het publiek door de wijk en 
woont een zestal kleine voorstellingen bij. Deze 
mini-concerten zijn samen met de bewoners tot 
stand gekomen en vinden plaats bij hen thuis. 
Professionele musici en theatermakers geven met 
avontuurlijke muziek en spel commentaar of zijn 
de verbindende factor. De regie is in handen van 
Daniel Cross (artistiek leider Rosa Ensemble).

Eboman workshop
Zondag 12 december, 12.00-14.00 uur
Huis a/d Werf, Boorstraat 107, Utrecht
Op 8 oktober ging in Huis a/d Werf Eboman's 
voorstelling 'Interface band: gedoe of gedaan' in 
premiere, een voorstelling waarin de drie 
performers pakken met sensoren droegen. Met een 
voet-, knie-, heup-, arm- of handbeweging werd er 
gescratched met beeld en geluid. Eboman heeft in 
de afgelopen jaren een aantal nieuwe instrumenten 
en technieken ontwikkeld waarmee geluid en beeld, 
bij voorkeur in real time, bewerkt kunnen worden 
tot een spetterend geheel. Daarnaast heeft hij 
ook andere instrumenten uitgevonden zoals de 
skrtZz-pen of een drumstel waarmee beelden en 
ritmes gegenereerd kunnen worden. Tijdens de 
workshop gaan de deelnemers samen met Eboman een 
choreografie van beeld en geluid maken op basis 
van de door Eboman ontwikkelde instrumenten.

Elizabet van der Kooij 'The Night Ripper Died'

Huis a/d Werf, Boorstraat 107, Utrecht
'The Night Ripper Died' is gebaseerd op 
waargebeurde ontwikkelingen die te volgen waren 
in een chatroom voor druggebruikers op het 
internet. Elizabet van der kooij laat met behulp 
van musici, acteurs en video het surrealisme van 
die virtuele wereld zien.

Paul Sharits 'Mandala Films'
Re:voir / Barooni video
In het midden van de zestiger jaren ontwikkelde 
de Amerikaanse, experimentele filmmaker Paul 
Sharits een abstrakte cinema die radicaal 
gepositioneerd was tegenover de beeldende, 
verhalende traditie. Zijn oeuvre is een reflectie 
op de aard van cinema en het medium film: de 
filmstrook, losse frames, het spoelen van film 
door de projector, de gaten in de stroken, 
scherm, projectie Š Door voornamelijk te werken 
met de 'flicker'-techniek (flikkeren tussen 
beelden en kleuren) creeërt Sharits in zijn films 
een disconinuïteit tussen de beelden, waarmee hij 
de magische kracht van het editen accentueert.

Dear reader

Due to the irregular nature of this newsletter 
you may have missed out on some information on 
previous projects in which Barooni or Roland 
Spekle were part of.
Spectacular was the presentation of the 
performance 'Interface Band: gedoe of gedaan' of 
Eboman, not in the least because of the new, self 
built sensor instruments that enable real time 
sound and image manipulation, that have been two 
years in the making.
Also amazing was the presentation of STEIM's 
Touch Exhibition and 'Ensemble, with workshops of 
Michel Waisvisz and Kristina Andersen for kids, 
which was presented as part of Barooni's series 
'Adventurous Music in Leidsche Rijn. While 
uninhibidly playing with physical, electronic 
sound objects and clothes with sensors, the 
children showed that they are the best test 
pilots for digital sound objects.
'Radioscape' of Edwin van der Heide offered 
participants to navigate through Amsterdam on the 
basis of specifically produced sounds transmitted 
to radio receivers, a presentation in the 
Interzone series of the Balie for the Transito 
festival.
In the November issue of the Wire there's a full 
page review of 'The Night of the Unexpected', 
which I'm particularly happy with.
If you have a chance of attending them I wish you 
lots of good moments with the many interesting 
concerts and manifestations in the months to come.

Robert Ashley "Lectures to be Sung" and conversation

Robert Ashley is a pioneer in contemporary music, 
who developed a unique idiom that he himself 
calls television operas. With innovative, text 
based works, in which there's often an 
interaction with electronica, Ashley created a 
unique style. He wrote many groundbreaking works, 
in which his hypnotic voice often plays an 
important part. In my personal opinion, 
"Automatic Writing" (1979) and "Perfect Lives" 
(1978-1980) are phenomenal documents of our times.

The Buffer Zone is an audio-visual work that 
explores boundaries of separation. The work is 
inspired by the UN buffer zone in Cyprus that 
runs across the island and divides the two 
communities.
In the performance, a Huis aan de Werf 
production, the audience and the space is split 
into two halves by hanging video screens. On each 
side there is a musician (piano and cello) who 
play imaginary duets with a virtual instrument on 
the other side. The central character is a UN 
soldier (singer/actor) who guards the buffer zone 
and freely crosses from side to side.
The central image of the work is of the inner 
state of the UN soldier and how that is projected 
into the divided theatre space. The soldier has 
to deal with his own boredom and his own 
dislocation and relocation in a desolate no man's 
land where his main duty consists of reporting 
and turning away trespassers who stumble into the 
zone.

Eboman 'DVJ'

In his DVJ programme, Eboman uses MTV-clips of 
stars like Missy Elliott, Madonna and Alicia Keys 
as the basis for his works. His reworkings of 
both the images and the sounds are tremendous 
statements, out of which he produces completely 
new audiovisual compositions. But he also makes 
the statement that his works that consists solely 
of samples, are autonomous compositions. Eboman 
brings digital sample art to the dancefloor.

Gameboyzz Orchestra and Florentintin
Sunday 21 November, 20.30 hours
STEIM, Utrechtsedwarsstraat 134, Amsterdam
The Gameboyzz Orchestra from Poland are a six 
piece experimental sound and image project, using 
the Gameboy console to produce music with. 
Florentintin, alias of Florentijn Boddendijk, 
produces plunderphonic collages from samples of 
jazz standards, calling it lapbop.

As part of the series 'Adventurous Music in 
Leidsche Rijn', Barooni presents 'Home Visits', a 
musical, living room event in which the 
inhabitants and their stories take a central 
position; their lives, their travels, their 
culture, their loves, their strangeness. In small 
groups the audience will walk along the area and 
visit six short performances, presented by 
musicians and theatre makers in people's homes. 
Daniel Cross, artistic director of the Rosa 
Ensemble, has directed this event.

Eboman workshop
Sunday 12 December, 12.00-14.00 hours
Huis a/d Werf, Boorstraat 107, Utrecht
On 8 October Eboman's piece 'Interface Band: 
gedoe of gedaan', a performance in which the 
three performers were wearing suits with built in 
sensors, was premiered in Huis aan de Werf. With 
foot, knee, hip, arm and hand movements the 
performers could scratch through sound and image 
sequences. The Dutch multimedia artist Eboman has 
created several new instruments in the past 
couple of years, which enables real time sound 
and visual manipulation. Aside of his new big 
work, the sensor instruments for the Interface 
band, he's created the skrtZz-pen and an 
audiovisual drumkit. At the workshop Eboman will 
collaborate with participants to create a 
choreography of sound and image with his self 
built instruments.

Elizabet van der Kooij 'The Night Ripper Died'

'The Night Ripper Died' is based on a dramatic 
story that actually happened in a chatroom for 
drug users on the internet. Together with 
musicians, actors and video artists, Elizabet van 
der Kooij shows the surrealism of this virtual 
world.

Paul Sharits 'Mandala Films'
Re:voir / Barooni video
In the mid-1960s, Paul Sharits developed an 
abstract cinema in radical opposition to the 
pictorial tradition. His works taken together 
propose a reflection on the very nature of cinema 
and its component parts: the film strip, single 
frames, the flow of film through the projector, 
sprocket holes, screen, projection Š Using mainly 
the flicker technique (flickering between 
pictures and colors) he highlights frame by frame 
discontinuity, thus revealing the hidden powers 
of editing.
