Op maandag 28 november presenteert STEIM een avond in theater Frascati
met Æ, Keith Rowe en Disinformation.
Æ

Æ bestaat uit Andrew Sharpley, elektronica en Emiko Ota, drums en  
percussie. Met zijn vorige groep, Stock, Hausen & Walkman, maakte  
Sharpley furore met de hevige en vaak grappige geluidscollages. Na  
SH&W verlaten te hebben, begon Sharpley in 1998 met Ota Æ. Deze groep  
maakte aanvankelijk een soort van trash electro-punk. In een tweede  
fase richtte de groep zich echter meer op songstructuren dan  
voorheen. Hun laatste CD, “Bootleg” op Sonig, is een mengvorm van  
ritmische cut-ups, geschreeuwde punkcollages en zo waar ook zoete  
melodieën.

Keith Rowe

Jackson Pollock veranderde de regels in de schilderkunst door zijn  
canvas op de grond te leggen. Keith Rowe deed enkele tientallen jaren  
geleden al iets soortgelijks door zijn gitaar op een tafel te leggen.  
In plaats van noten en akkoorden te spelen, benadert Rowe de gitaar  
met strijkstok, veren, ventilator, lineaal en talloze andere  
objecten. Op deze wijze maakte Rowe van de gitaar een  
geluidsgenererend systeem. Door een radio vlak bij zijn pick up  
element te houden, sluipen flarden van liedjes, dialoog en ruis zijn  
muziek in, vergelijkbaar met Marcel Duchamp’s gevonden kunst. Rowe is  
mede-oprichter van de legendarische improvisatiegroep AMM, samen met  
Eddie Prévost en John Tilbury en is tegenwoordig ook regelmatig te  
zien met een jongere generatie van improvisatoren zoals Axel Dörner,  
Fennesz en Toshimaru Nakamura.

Disinformation

Als je afstemt op het laagste frequentiebereik van het radiospectrum,  
kan de luisteraar onverwachte fenomenen tegenkomen, die een inzicht  
geven in een wereld die bruist van de elektrische activiteit.  
Fluitende atmosferische geluiden van de bliksem en thermonucleaire  
processen schieten langs velden van de magnetosfeer, kaatsend tussen  
de hemisferen. Stormen kraken, biostatische processen fluisteren,  
ruisen en zuchten. Televisies schreeuwen en elektrische  
spanningsvelden creëren luidruchtige drones. Disinformation verwerkt  
deze geluiden in zijn muziek. Zo ook militaire signalen, de muzikale  
pulsen van navigatiesystemen, tijdcodes en gecodeerde  
dataverzendingen diep onder de zee. Disinformation schetst een  
geluidsbeeld, waarin tijd en ruimte gescheiden zijn, waarin de  
illusie van stilte in de ruimte verstoord wordt.

Æ

Æ is a musical outfit consisting of Andrew Sharpley on electronics  
(Stock, Hausen & Walkman, Dummy Run, Mami Chan band a.o.) and Emiko  
Ota on drums and percussion (Urban Sax, Mami Chan Band, etc.). Formed  
in 1998, the group started as a kind of trash electro-punk duo with  
shouting. The addition of Noel Akchoté the next year found them  
forcing themselves to clean their act up a bit and attempt more  
traditional song structures. After this, Æ hopped onto the musical  
elevator again. “Bootleg”, their great album on Sonig, is a mixture  
of laptop based rhythmic cut ups, shouty punk collages and a return  
to the sweeter more melodic stuff.

Keith Rowe

Jackson Pollock changed the rules of painting by laying his canvases  
on the floor. Keith Rowe did much the same for the guitar four  
decades ago by placing it on a table. Instead of playing notes and  
chords, the British musician agitates the instrument with bows,  
rulers, springs, electric fans, and a host of other items, turning  
the guitar into a sound-generating system. He also uses it as a sound  
conductor: playing radios near the pickups, he inserts snatches of  
songs, dialogue, and static into the music, creating an auditory  
analogue to Marcel Duchamp's found art. Until last year Rowe's main  
gig was in the free-improv group AMM, which he cofounded in 1965--he  
didn't record a solo album until 1989, but lately he's forged  
connections with a younger generation of improvisers, such as Axel  
Dörner, Fennesz and Toshimaru Nakamura.

Disinformation

Tuning down into the lowest reaches of the radio spectrum,  
particularly in night`s shadow of the solar wind, the listener  
encounters a range of diverse phenomena, opening a window on a world  
alive with electrical activity. Whistling atmospherics from lightning  
and thermonuclear EMP ricochet along field lines of the  
magnetosphere, bouncing between hemispheres of the globe. Storms  
crackle, biostatics whisper, hiss, and sigh. Televisions scream,  
pylons and power loops drone and roar. Disinformation uses these  
sounds in his music. Also military signals, the musical pulses of  
navigation systems, timecodes, and coded data broadcast deep beneath  
the sea. Disinformation creates a sound image, where time and space  
are divided, where the illusion of quiet in space is disturbed.
