STEIM presenteert Zaterdag 25 maart om 20.30 uur een concertavond met  
David Grubbs en Guido Möbius


David Grubbs

David Grubbs is een eigenzinnige Amerikaanse componist en muzikant,  
wiens werk zich in steeds avantgardistischer richting begeeft. In  
zijn schooltijd was Grubbs lid van de punkband Squirrel Bait, die ook  
het invloedrijke Slint en Bastro voortbracht. Met de muzikale  
duizendpoot Jim O'Rourke verandert de naam Bastro in Gastr Del Sol,  
waarmee traditie en avantgarde gecombineerd worden. De groep heeft  
een aantal grensverleggende CD’s op haar naam, die prachtige  
melodieën verbinden met een zeer eigengereide muzikale benadering. Na  
het ontbinden van Gastr Del Sol presenteert Grubbs zich als  
soloartiest en incidenteel in groepsverband. In zijn microscopische  
muziek zoomt hij in op details. Zijn geluid is zeer geconcentreerd en  
minimalistisch. Grubbs speelde met talloze artiesten samen als Tony  
Conrad, Noel Akchoté, en anderen. Zijn werk geeft hij onder andere  
uit op zijn label Blue Chopsticks, waarin hij ook een aantal werken  
uitbracht van de helaas afgelopen jaar overleden Luc Ferrari, voor  
wiens werk Grubbs een grote voorliefde heeft.

Guido Möbius

Als soloartiest creëert Guido Möbius een hele uniek en intiem geluid.  
Zijn geluidscollages worden gevormd door de veelheid aan  
instrumenten, meestal akoestisch van aard. Knisperende klanklagen en  
zoete tonen komen samen in complexe arrangementen. Op zijn debuut-CD  
Dekorder, zijn bijvoorbeeld naast elektronische klanken ook banjo,  
harp, gitaar en bas te horen. Zijn werk klinkt als een muzikale  
ontdekkingreis.
In Möbius’ muziek speelt de groove altijd een rol, maar dan wel in  
zeer fijnzinnige, polyritmische percussiepatronen en constant  
veranderende harmonieën. Möbius heeft altijd een lichtheid over zich  
die zijn affiniteit met popmuziek toont. Tegelijkertijd ontregelt  
zijn muziek verwachtingspatronen en toont een creatieve rusteloosheid.

with David Grubbs and Guido Möbius


David Grubbs

David Grubbs is an idiosyncratic American composer and musician,  
whose work seems to go more and more into experimental directions. In  
his highschool days he was a member of the punk band Squirrel Bait,  
of which the members would later form influential groups like Slint  
and Bastro, of which Grubbs was a member. With Jim O’ Rourke he  
formed Gastr del Sol, in which tradition and avant garde are  
combined. The group has released several groundbreaking CD’s, the  
music combining beautiful melodies with an idiosyncratic,  
comtemporary musical approach. After disbanding Gastr del Sol, Grubbs  
started a solo career. In his microscopic music he seems to zoom in  
on details. His sound is very concentrated and minimalistic. Grubbs  
played with various artists such as Noel Akchoté and Tony Conrad. His  
work was amongst others released on his Blue Chopsticks label, on  
which he also released music of the late Luc Ferrari, whose music he  
admires.

Guido Möbius

As a solo-artist Guido Möbius creates a unique and intimate sound. A  
whole lot of instruments, most of them acoustic, define the  
soundcollage. Brittle soundtissues and sweet tones blend in complex  
arrangements. With his debut Möbius masters the thin line between  
lightness and complexity. The list of the used instruments (guitar,  
bass, glockenspiel, voice, Jew´s harp, banjo, percussions, Portasound  
Samplingkeyboard, Moog...) alone shows the musical versatility and a  
mind to test and try.
Always having an eye on the groove, Möbius has a special liking for  
small parts of polyrhythmic percussion-patterns and constantly  
changing harmonies. Möbius’ music always has a certain lightness to  
it, which shows his affinity with pop music. His music disorders  
expectations and shows a creative restlessness and fear of stagnation.
