Op donderdag 7 september vindt onder redactie van 
Roland Spekle the Night of The Unexpected plaats. 
In dit festival van één nacht krijgen de 
verscheidenheid en dynamiek die de hedendaagse 
muziekpraktijk kenmerken, gestalte. Het zal 
daarbij zowel gaan om gecomponeerde muziek als om 
geïmproviseerde muziek, elektronische dansmuziek 
of performances waarin muziek met visuele 
uitingen wordt gecombineerd. Voor de Night is een 
unieke presentatiewijze ontwikkeld die een 
onverwachte, directe relatie tussen publiek en 
artiesten creëert. Het programma wordt in een 
strak geregisseerde opeenvolging van korte, 
puntige optredens zonder pauzes gepresenteerd. 
Vaak wordt daarbij het podium als het 
traditionele domein van de artiest verlaten en 
wordt gebruik gemaakt van de specifieke 
mogelijkheden die het gebouw biedt. Het Engelse 
muziektijdschrift The WIRE: "The real starting 
point for the unexpected was the forceful ground 
on which the disperate techniques and genres 
intersected and collided with each other 
throughout the evening."

In the Night of the Unexpected worden de 
uitersten van verschillende hedendaagse muzikale 
stromingen in een ongebruikelijke vorm 
bijeengebracht worden.

The Night of the Unexpected bestaat uit de volgende onderdelen:
Lee Ranaldo, DJ Olive en saxofonist Ulrich 
Krieger spelen (of speelden) in veel 
verschillende groepen, zoals Sonic Youth, 
Zeitkratzer Ensemble en Text of Light. Als trio 
creëren ze  pakkende geluidsbeelden bij films van 
pioniers in de experimentele film, waaronder 
films van Harry Smith, Hy Hirsh en anderen.
Phill Niblock & Thomas Ankersmit spelen dichte, 
luide, elektronische drones, waarin microtonen en 
instrumentale timbres samenkomen.
In een energiek stuk van Michael Gordon, een New 
Yorkse componist en een van de oprichters van 
Bang on a Can, produceert Monica Germino een 
industrieel geluid met haar aangepaste 
acoestische viool.
Madrigalen van Gesualdo, gezongen door het 
uitmuntende Kassiopeia Quintet, zullen klinken 
naast De Profundis en Et Expecto, de 
accordeoncomposities van Sofia Gubaidulina, tot 
klinken gebracht door Merima Kljuco.
Twee composities voor geluid en licht van Marko 
Ciciliani zullen uitgevoerd worden als een 
wereldpremière door zijn nieuwe groep Bakin Zub.
Turntablist DJ Olive laat twee draaitafels met elkaar in gesprek gaan.
Sonic Youth-lid Lee Ranaldo brengt met Drift een 
multidisciplinaire solovoorstelling met 
gitaarerupties, poëtische teksten en bedwelmende 
filmbeelden van filmmaker Leah Singer.
Saxofonist Ulrich Krieger speelde ooit Metal 
Machine Music met het Zeitkratzer Ensemble en Lou 
Reed. Nu creëert hij zelf feedbackgeluiden met 
saxofoon en elektronica.
Paul Sharits maakte stroboscopische films die een 
hypnotiserend effect op de kijker hebben. Zijn 
dubbelprojectie Razor Blades is een 
overweldigende ervaring.
Juha draait elektronica, dubstep en elektronische dansmuziek.
Lynn Pook toont haar luisterbedden, waarbij de 
luisteraar de klank zowel hoort als fysiek 
ervaart.
Jorge Isaac toont zijn onderzoekswerk Sensorial 
Acts, een installatie voor geluid, beeld, 
temperatuur en geur.


The Night of The Unexpected is een productie van 
Stichting the Night of the Unexpected i.s.m. 
Gaudeamus. Paradiso en Steim en is onderdeel van 
de Gaudeamus Muziekweek, waarin composities van 
jonge internationale componisten worden 
gepresenteerd.

the Night of the Unexpected

On Thursday 7 September, under the artistic 
guidance of Roland Spekle, the Night of the 
Unexpected will take place in Paradiso, 
Amsterdam. In this one-night festival, the 
diversity and dynamics that characterise 
contemporary music practice will be fully 
explored. Composed music, improvised music, 
electronic dance music, and performances in which 
music is combined with visual work will be 
presented. For this event, a specific manner of 
presentation has been developed which creates an 
unexpected, direct relationship between audience 
and artists. The programme consists of a series 
of short performances without breaks, and the 
stage as the traditional domain of the artist is 
often traded in for a position closer to the 
audience, or for one that uses the specific 
characteristics of the building.

The Night of the Unexpected focuses on the 
extremes of the diverse styles in contemporary 
music, combining and presenting them in an 
unexpected way.

The Night of the Unexpected consists of:

Lee Ranaldo, DJ Olive and saxophonist Ulrich 
Krieger play (or have played) in various 
different groups, such as Sonic Youth, 
Zeitkratzer Ensemble and Text of Light. As a trio 
they create intriguing sound textures while films 
by pioneers of the experimental film such as 
Harry Smith and Hy Hirsh are being projected.
Phill Niblock & Thomas Ankersmit create dense 
electronic and acoustic sound pieces, in which 
microtonal and instrumental timbres come together.
In an energetic piece by Michael Gordon, a New 
York composer and one of the founders of Bang on 
a Can, Monica Germino produces an industrial 
sound with her adapted acoustic violin.
Madrigals of Gesualdo, sung by the excellent 
Kassiopeia Quintet can be enjoyed as well as De 
Profundis and Et Expecto, the accordeon 
compositions by Sofia Gubaidulina, performed by 
Merima Kljuco.
Two compositions for sound and light by Marko 
Ciciliani will be performed as a world premiere 
by his new group Bakin Zub.
Turntablist DJ Olive will create a dialogue between two turntables.
With Drift, Sonic Youth-member Lee Ranaldo will 
present a multidisciplinary solo performance with 
guitar outbursts, poetic texts and intoxicating 
film images of film maker Leah Singer.
A few years ago, saxophonist Ulrich Krieger 
performed Metal Machine Music with the 
Zeitkratzer Ensemble and Lou Reed. In the Night, 
he presents a solo piece with feedback sounds for 
saxophone and electronica.
Paul Sharits made stroboscopic films that have a 
hypnotic effect on the spectator. His double 
projection Razor Blades is an overwhelming 
experience.
Juha plays electronica, dubstep and electronic dance music.
Lynn Pook presents her 'listening beds' 
installation Raplapla, in which one can both 
acoustically and physically experience the sound.
Jorge Isaac presents his research work Sensorial 
Acts, an installation for sound, image, 
temperature and smell.

The Night of the Unexpected is a production of 
the Night of the Unexpected Foundation in 
collaboration with Gaudeamus, Steim and Paradiso, 
and is a part of the international Gaudeamus 
Music Week, in which compositions by young 
international composers are performed.
