This fall STEIM presents a reacTable workshop and lecture. The reacTable is
a state-of-the-art multi-user electro-acoustic music instrument with a
tabletop tangible user interface. Several simultaneous performers share
complete control over the instrument by moving physical artefacts on the
table surface and constructing different audio topologies in a kind of
tangible modular synthesizer or graspable flow-controlled programming
language.

The instrument was developed by a team of digital luthiers under the
direction of Dr. Sergi JordÃ. The "Interactive Sonic Systems" team is
working in the Music Technology Group within the Audiovisual Institute at
the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona Spain. Its main activities
concentrate on the design of new musical interfaces, such as tangible music
instruments and musical applications for mobile devices.

The workshop will be held at STEIM (Achtergracht 19) by Martin Kaltenbrunner
and Sergi JordÃ, on Oct 30 & 31 and Nov 1 from 10-13h and 14h-17h. The
lecture will take place at STEIM (Utrechtsedwarsstraat 134) on Tuesday Oct
31 at 20:00h.

During the first day of the workshop the concepts and history behind the
reacTable <http://mtg.upf.es/reactable/> will be introduced, and the
participants will have the opportunity to learn how to play the instrument
as well as how to set-up their own reacTable configuration and style.
The following two days the participants will have the opportunity to design
their own tangible music table similar to the reacTable, using the
reacTIVision <http://mtg.upf.es/reactable?software> framework, a flexible
table-top TUI environment based on computer vision. The workshop will
provide an overview on tangible musical interfaces in general, introduce the
reacTIVision framework and the related programming environments, as well as
instruct how to build the necessary table hardware.

Bios:

Sergi Jordà <http://www.iua.upf.edu/%7Esergi> holds a PhD in Computer
Science and Digital Communication from the Pompeu Fabra University of
Barcelona, where he teaches computer music, audio programming, HCI, and
interactive media arts. As a luthier and improviser he likes to invent new
digital musical instruments without forgetting to make music with them. His
music has been released on various labels and compilations, he has composed
for different instrumental setups and for films, but he prefers the
immediacy and volatility of free improvisation. As a researcher, he has
written many articles, books, given workshops and lectured though Europe,
Asia and America. As a digital media creator, he has also worked extensively
in performances and installations in collaboration with other artists.

Martin Kaltenbrunner <http://www.iua.upf.edu/%7Emkalten> is a researcher and
Ph.D. candidate working in the Music Technology Group within the Audiovisual
Institute at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain. His research
covers auditory and tangible user interfaces and interactive sonic systems -
topics, which he has been teaching at various european universities.
Currently he is mainly working on the reacTable*, a novel electronic music
instrument with a tangible user interface.

Practical info:

The workshop participants should have some knowledge of programming at least
in one of the following environments: Processing, Pure Data, Max/MSP, Java
or 
C/C++.  Frameworks for each of this environments will be provided and the
participants can choose which they prefer. Participants are encouraged to
bring their own laptops and webcams - STEIM will have some webcams and
desktop mac computers available, but those will be limited. Please let us
