Nic Collins, componist, musicus, journalist en schrijver, professor  
en voormalig artistiek leider van STEIM, zal dinsdag 21 november zijn  
boek "Handmade Electronic Music -- The Art of Hardware Hacking"  
presenteren. In dit boek schetst Collins de tactiele exploratie van  
zelfgebouwde elektronische instrumenten en de subtiele sabotage van  
kinderspeelgoed tot game controllers: een wereld van ongebruikelijke  
geluiden wordt ontsloten door het misleiden van oude Casio-keyboards  
of irritante geluidsboeken Elektronische muziek (en het opnemen van  
muziek) is ontstaan doordat experimenterende kunstenaars en  
wetenschappers luisterden naar de biepjes en het kraken van  
elektriciteit terwijl dit door met de hand gesoldeerde componenten  
liep. Deze pioniers van de elektronische muziek bouwden hun eigen  
instrumenten, waren op zoek naar nieuwe geluiden en vonden een totaal  
nieuwe muzikale taal en vorm uit. De resulterende folk electronic  
instruments, zoals de STEIM kraakdoos, werd het basisinstrumentarium  
van een ongebonden groep van componisten die opkwam in de 70-er  
jaren, ná John Cage, David Tudor en David Behrman en vóór Oval, Moby  
en Matmos. Nic Collins geeft de bezoeker een kijkje in deze  
wonderlijke wereld door een mini hacking workshop te verzorgen.

Nic Collins, composer, musician, journalist and writer, professor and  
former artistic director of STEIM, will present his book "Handmade  
Electronic Music -- The Art of Hardware Hacking" on Tuesday November  
21.In this book composer Nicolas Collins champions the tactile  
exploration of home-built electronics and subtle sabotage of kiddie  
toys: a legion of unusual sounds lurks within those thrift-store  
Casio keyboards and annoying talking books. Early electronic music  
(and the recording of music itself) was born of experimenting artists  
and engineers, patiently listening to the bleeps, swoops and crackles  
of electricity as it flowed through components lovingly soldered  
together by hand. The early pioneers of electronic music had to build  
their own instruments from scratch, finding new sounds as they went,  
inventing entirely new musical languages and forms, pulling new  
sounds from the ether.

These folk electronic instruments, such as the STEIM Cracklebox,  
became the calling cards of a loose coalition of composers that  
emerged in the mid-70s, after John Cage, David Tudor, and David  
Behrman, and before Oval, Moby, and Matmos.
Nic Collins will will give  us a glimpse in this unusual sound  
world,  by offering a mini hacking workshop.
