Between Behaviour and Representation
Lecture on how organizations learn, produce and create meanings
through imagery, artefacts and staging.
Heather Höpfl is Professor of Management at the University of Essex
This presentation examines how organizations learn, produce and
create meanings through imagery, artefacts and staging. It will use
Disney as an example of meaning creation but will also consider
illustrations from a range of other organizations such as Southwest
Airlines, British Airways and McDonalds. The presentation will
consider different aspects of organizational culture and will look at
examples of visible aspects of culture. It will look at the ways in
which these are produced and managed. The aesthetic interpretation
of organizational behaviour will be considered in relation to what
the creation of organization might mean in this context. The theatre
of organizations is part of this production of meaning. A further
aspect of this is concerned with how the analysis of organization can
be seen in the context of both vision and blindness and what it means
to speak of abocular (Out of the eye, see http://
www.derridathemovie.com/comment-1.html) vision. I will provide a
theoretical context for a series of exercises which look at inference
and meaning; at inferential readings of organizational imagery and
its meaning; and at the relationship between images of organization
and its significance to any such interpretation. It is intended that
the exercises will draw attention to a range of different
interpretative issues such as the significance of the standpoint, the
relationship between rule and role, the accumulative characteristics
of inference and so forth.
Heather Höpfl is Professor of Management at the University of Essex.
She is an organizational psychologist and has worked with a range of
organizations including ICL, the Dept of Social Security, British
Telecomm, British Airways, and in mental hospitals and prisons. She
is currently undertaking research with Southwest Airlines. She has
published extensively on organizational symbolism and aesthetics
including The Aesthetics of Organization with Stephen Linstead and is
the editor of Culture of Organization. She is a former chair of
SCOS, The Standing Conference of Organizational Symbolism and has
been a regular convenor of the EGOS standing stream on the Philosophy
of Management with Stephen Linstead for six years. She gave a
Keynote Address at the SCMOI conference in Las Vegas in 2007
entitled, Master and Convert: on women and other strangers. She is
married to Harro Höpfl and has two children, George and Max.

donderdag 31 mei | visies op design
Theodore Watson (www.muonics.net), David Kousemaker (www.blendid.nl)
