The Night of the Unexpected is een festival van één nacht, gericht op  
nieuwe ontwikkelingen in de hedendaagse muziek. In een strak  
geregisseerde opeenvolging voert The Night je dwars door stijlen en  
genres: van experimentele techno tot gecomponeerd repertoire. The  
Night of the Unexpected op donderdag 6 september in Paradiso.











The Night of the Unexpected is ontstaan vanuit de behoefte aan  
performances die de randen van genres opzoeken en zich op de  
grensvlakken tussen stijlen begeven. Van experimentele hiphop tot  
vernieuwende combinaties van film en muziek. Ook is er een programma  
met experimentele films, dit jaar films van Liz Rhodes, Paul Sharits,  
Guy Sherwin, Tony Conrad en James Whitney, waarbij de relatie tusssen  
film en muziek centraal staat.

Een korte introductie van deelnemende artiesten:
De legendarische saxofonist Peter Brötzmann zorgt met de  
percussionist Paal Nilssen-Love en de Japanse hyper-kotospeler  
Michiyo Yagi voor een elektrificerende performance.
Pole voegt met zijn band een nieuwe dimensie toe aan zijn abstracte  
dub en funk experimenten.
Het Nederlands Kamerkoor zingt het meesterlijke Lux Aterna van György  
Ligeti, dat ook in de soundtrack van 2001: A Space Odyssey van  
Stanley Kubrick is opgenomen.
Ultieme percussie en gitaarerupties zijn er van MoHa! ofwel Morten  
Olsen en Anders Hana.
Le Poème électronique is een elektronisch gedicht voor de 20ste eeuw  
van Le Corbusier, met muziek van Edgard Varèse, een futuritisch  
geluids- en lichtwerk uit 1958. Een voorvertoning van een  
voorbeeldige reconstructie.
·       Errorsmith staat voor opgehakte beats en doorgedraaide samples.

·       Voor hun Metal Machine Music-project creërt het Noorse  
Jazkamer met gitaren, drums en elektronica een meedogenloze mix van  
metal en noise.

·       DJ Sniff en Keir Neuringer gebruiken draaitafels, computer,  
saxofoon en cassetterecorders als instrumenten in hun performance.

·       Toshimaru Nakamura tovert geluid uit een ‘no-input mixer’.

·       Public Enemy meets My Bloody Valentine? Mobb Deep meets Glenn  
Branca? Dälek maakt hiphop met een experimentele inslag.

·       Martijn Tellinga maakt gebruik van de ruimte om zijn  
elektronische texturen tot klinken te brengen.

·       Met zijn Space Studies maakt Rafael Toral muziek met nieuwe  
technologie.

·       Onder de naam AK47 Soundsystem omlijsten Koen Nutters en  
Andre Avelas de Night.

The Night of The Unexpected is een productie van Stichting the Night  
of the Unexpected i.s.m. Gaudeamus. Paradiso en STEIM en is onderdeel  
van de Gaudeamus Muziekweek, waarin composities van jonge  
internationale componisten worden gepresenteerd.

The Night of the Unexpected is a one night festival focussing on new  
developments in contemporary music. The Night travels through styles  
and genres: from experimental techno to composed repertoire. The  
Night of the Unexpected takes place in Paradiso, Amsterdam, on  
Thursday September 6.













The Night of the Unexpected has emerged from the need for  
performances on the edge of existing genres and borderlines of  
styles. It features everything from experimental Hip Hop to  
innovatory combinations of film and music.

This year also features a programme with experimental films, from Liz  
Rhodes, Paul Sharits, Guy Sherwin, Tony Conrad and James Whitney,  
focussing on the relationship between film and music.

A short introduction to the artists:
Legendary saxophonist Peter Brötzmann puts together an electrifying  
performance with percussionist Paal Nilssen-Love and Japanese hyper- 
koto player Michiyo Yagi
Pole adds new dimensions to his abstract dub and funk experiments
The Dutch Chamber Choir sings the masterful Lux Aterna by György  
Ligeti, featured in the soundtrack of 2001: A Space Odyssey van  
Stanley Kubrick
MoHa!, a.k.a. Morten Olsen and Anders Hana, bring ultimate percussion  
and guitar eruptions
Le Poème électronique is an electronic poem for the 20th Century by  
Le Corbusier, with music by Edgard Varèse, a futuristic work of sound  
and light from 1958. A preview of a perfect reconstruction
·       Errorsmith respresents cut-up beats and freaked out samples

·       For their Metal Machine Music project, Norwegian Jazkamer  
creates a ruthless mix of metal and noise with guitars, drums and  
electronic equipment

·       DJ Sniff and Keir Neuringer use turntables, a computer, a  
saxophone and tape recorders in their performance

·       Toshimaru Nakamura makes noise with a ‘no-input mixer’

·       Public Enemy meets My Bloody Valentine? Mobb Deep meets Glenn  
Branca? Dälek makes Hip Hop with an experimental twist

·       Martijn Tellinga uses space to make his electronic textures sing

·       With his Space Studies, Rafael Toral makes music with new  
technologies

·       AK47 Soundsystem (Koen Nutters and Andre Avelas) host the Night.

The Night of the Unexpected is a production of the Night of the  
Unexpected Foundation in collaboration with Gaudeamus, STEIM and  
Paradiso, and is a part of the international Gaudeamus Music Week, in
