& 28 februari plaatsvindt in het Nederlands Architectuurinstituut te  
Rotterdam.

Hoe verandert de mobiele telefoon onze relatie met de stad? Wat is de  
invloed van GPS-navigatie op onze ervaring van ruimte en plaats? Wat  
betekent dit voor onze ideeën over mobiliteit? Wat betekent de opmars  
van mobiele informatie-, communicatie- en identificatiediensten voor  
de manier waarop wij met elkaar samenleven in de stad? En hoe kunnen  
architecten, stedenbouwkundigen en nieuwe media-ontwerpers hierop  
inspelen?

Deze thema's komen aan de orde op de conferentie The Mobile City, die  
op 27 en 28 februari wordt gehouden in het Nederlands Architectuur  
Instituut in Rotterdam. The Mobile City brengt wetenschappers,  
architecten en andere stedelijke professionals, alsmede media- 
ontwerpers bij elkaar om in te gaan op de vraag: wat gebeurt er met  
onze stedelijke cultuur en identiteit wanneer fysieke en digitale  
ruimtes met elkaar versmelten?

Achtergrond
De fysieke, geografische stad met z'n pleinen, buurten en kruispunten  
is het afgelopen decennium doorregen geraakt met de 'virtuele  
ruimtes' van elektronische communicatie-, informatie- en  
observatienetwerken zoals GSM, GPS, CCTV, UMTS, WIFI, RFID, etc.  
Tegelijkertijd wordt het virtuele domein in toenemende mate fysiek.  
Er wordt wel gesproken over een "internet der dingen". Een ander  
voorbeeld hiervan is de opmars van 'pervasive games': digitale games  
met een fysieke component in de stedelijke ruimte. Kunnen we nog  
langer spreken over de stad als een puur fysieke ruimte? Of over de  
digitale wereld als uitsluitend 'virtueel'? De fysieke stad en het  
digitale domein versmelten steeds meer tot een nieuwe "hybride  
ruimte". Deze ruimte wordt vormgegeven door sociale processen die  
gelijktijdig plaatsvinden in zowel digitale als fysieke omgevingen.  
Wat is de invloed van deze ontwikkelingen op onze perceptie van tijd,  
ruimte en plaats, op noties van burgerschap en identiteit?

Vragen die tijdens de conferentie aan de orde komen
Locatieve en mobiele media kunnen begrepen worden als 'interfaces'  
tussen het digitale domein en de stad. Ze vormen een  brug tussen de  
sociale processen die in voorheen sterker van elkaar afgescheiden  
werelden (fysiek of digitaal) plaatsvonden maar nu steeds meer in  
elkaar overvloeien. Op The Mobile City komen de volgende vragen aan bod:

• Vanuit een theoretisch perspectief: wat zijn bruikbare concepten om  
de vervaging tussen, of samensmelting van digitale en fysieke ruimtes  
te begrijpen?

• Vanuit een maatschappij-kritisch perspectief: wat betekent de  
opkomst van locatieve- en mobiele media voor stedelijke cultuur,  
burgerschap en identiteiten?

• Vanuit een praktijkgericht perspectief: wat betekent dit voor de  
beroepspraktijk van stedelijke professionals (architecten,ontwerpers,  
planologen), en mediaontwerpers?

Weblog
Op www.themobilecity.nl houden de organisatoren ook een weblog bij  
waarop belangrijke ontwikkelingen worden gesignaleerd die verwant  
zijn aan het thema van de conferentie. Relevante bijdragen van derden  
zijn welkom.

Doelgroep
The Mobile City-conferentie richt zich op iedereen die zich bezig  
houdt met ruimtelijke vraagstukken en stedelijke identiteit en de rol  
van communicatie en informatietechnologie daarin. Het programma is  
interessant voor onder meer architecten, media-theoretici,  
beleidsmakers, interactiedesigners, sociologen, stedenbouwkundigen,   
telecomondernemers, communicatiewetenschappers, planologen, nieuwe  
media-ontwerpers, studenten en anderen.

Call for Participation - Workshops
Op 27 februari worden er twee intensieve workshops gehouden. De  
eerste workshop (met Stephen Graham en Christian Nold) gaat over  
locatieve media en stedelijke cultuur. De tweede workshop (met Tim  
Cresswell en Malcolm McCullough) gaat over mobiliteit en nieuwe  
technologieën. Geïnteresseerden kunnen (voor 31 januari) een korte  
biografie en motivatie om deel te nemen sturen aan  
info@themobilecity.nl. Het aantal plaatsen is beperkt.

Call for Participation - Project-presentaties
Op 28 februari worden er tijdens de hoofdconferentie als afwisseling  
op de Keynote-lezingen een aantal locatieve en mobiele mediaprojecten  
gepresenteerd. Voorstellen voor korte presentaties (ca 10 minuten)  
van bijvoorbeeld locatieve mediakunstwerken, nieuwe commerciële  
locatieve mediadiensten, pervasive games, mobiele marketing  
campagnes, geo-annotatie of geo-storytelling, onderzoeksprojecten,  
etc. etc zijn welkom. Stuur (voor 31 januari) een e-mail met een  
korte projectbeschrijving naar info@themobilecity.nl.

The Mobile City vindt plaats op 27 en 28 februari 2008 in het  
Nederlands Architectuurinstituut (NAi) te Rotterdam.

"The Mobile City" is a two-day conference about locative & mobile  
technologies, urban culture and identity. The Mobile City brings  
academics, architects, urban professionals and media designers  
together to address the question: what happens to urban culture when  
physical and digital spaces merge? Keynote speakers are Stephen  
Graham, Tim Cresswell, Malcolm McCullough and Christian Nold.

Background
The physical, geographical city with its piazza’s, its neighbourhoods  
and crossings intersects with the ‘virtual space’ of electronic  
communication-, information- and observation-networks of GSM, GPS,  
CCTV, UMTS, WIFI, RFID, etc. At the same time, the domain of digital  
space is increasingly becoming physical, an “internet of things” is  
emerging. Another example is the rise of 'pervasive games', digital  
games with a physical component in urban space. Is it still useful or  
even possible to talk about the city as being only physical? Or about  
the digital world as purely ‘virtual’ (in the sense of 'not real' or  
immaterial)? The physical city and the spaces of digital technologies  
merge into a new “hybrid space”. Hybrid spaces are shaped by the  
social processes that concurrently take place in digital and physical  
spaces. What is the influence of these developments on the ideas we  
have of time, space and place, citizenship and identity?

Conference questions
Locative and mobile media can be understood as interfaces between the  
digital domain and the city, as bridges between the social processes  
that formerly took place in more separated domains (digital or  
physical) but now are spilling over into each other. The Mobile City  
will ask the following questions:

• From a theoretical point of view, what are useful concepts to talk  
about the blurring/merging of physical and digital spaces?

• From a critical perspective, what does the emergence of locative  
and mobile media mean for urban culture, citizenship, and identities?

• From a professional point of view, what does all this mean for the  
work of urban professionals (architects, designers, planners), media  
designers, and academics?

Call for Participation - Workshops
On February 27th two small scale intensive workshops will be held.  
The first session is about Urban Culture and locative media (with  
Stephen Graham and Christian Nold), the second session about mobility  
and new technologies (with Tim Cresswell and Malcolm McCullough).  
Please send a very brief bio with relevant current and past  
activities, and short motivation to info@themobilecity.nl. Indicate  
what you would like to contribute to, and get from the session(s).  
Only a limited number of places is available. When interest  
supersedes availability, the organizing committee will select  
participants. Registration closes at January 31st.

Call for Participation - Project Presentations
During the main conference on February 28th, Keynote speeches will be  
alternated with short project presentations about locative and/or  
mobile technologies for artistic purposes, business, research, etc.  
We are thinking of: locative media art, commercial locative services,  
pervasive gaming, mobile marketing campaigns, geo-tagging or geo- 
storytelling, research projects etc. etc. Your presentation  will  
have to fit in 10 minutes, and be as concrete as possible. Your  
project will also be featured on our website. If you wish to present,  
please send us an email about your project at info@themobilecity.nl.  
Please do so before january 31st.
