STUDY FOR A NARRATIVE, 2011, GALLERY PIECE (INTERLUDE)
flash movie
We are in a countryside hotel, the morning light filtered roze-red by
heavy curtains. The sparse furniture is sought out with some taste: a
dresser topped with a high, exquisitely decorated mirror in a style
derivative of Art Nouveau; on the floor a lush carpet, the deep, wine-
red background colour offset by images of lustfully coiling serpents.
A large, bulging double bed in the same style, filling nearly half the
small room. The bed-clothes lie in disarray. Our Narrator is on the
telephone, pacing frantically. Obviously, We can only hear his voice.
NARRATOR: "I paid her four hundred and forty-five. Four hundred and
forty-five."
"No, just for this scene."
"No."
As I told you..."
His voice rises ever higher now: ".. as I told you, I have it on
paper. But what's the use? She won't come back, not now..."
All at once, our Narrator seems very tired. He stoops, looks for the
bed, sets himself down, his head in his hands. The telephone receiver
has slipped from his fingers, and now swings helplessly on its tether,
just inches from the floor. Our Narrator sobs once, sighs, slides to
the ground. We can hear the other party calling out, but the voice is
too muffled to understand.

STUDY FOR A NARRATIVE, 2011, GALLERY PIECE (PREAMBLE)
flash movie
NARRATOR: "Imagine the setting. This is the setting: a high, cool
space, well-lit. The walls are a brilliant white, the floor a highly
polished hardwood. It's a gallery. There's a small table set to one
side, and at the table, we see someone on the phone. We will call this
person AUTHOR. We hear just this small fragment..."
AUTHOR: "I'd like to do a longish piece. A narrative. Probably
fiction. It's to be about two people in a situation. It's to be a
situation piece.
It should start with some sort of mystery. A mystery. Some sort of
suspense story. Something happens, something out of the ordinary.
Something happens and no-one knows what the outcome might be. Not even
the AUTHOR."
