[Nettime-nl] Becoming Dutch in Tallinn (Modified by Geert Lovink) |
TRANSLOCAL EXPRESS. JUBILEE EDITION Date: Feb 21-23, 2008 Venue: Museum of Occupations, Toompea 8, Tallinn An international seminar in the series of Public Preparation events addressing the growing tendencies of nationalism on Eastern borders of Europe (from Helsinki to Istanbul) and its relation to contemporary art. Whereas in the former socialist block national resistance to the socialist system is remembered in a positive way, the current re-emergence of nationalist sentiments in Europe more generally is an alarming tendency which is often accompanied by growing phenomena of xenophobia and racism. The critique of nationalism becomes especially urgent in the light of the growing reality of migration which is now under debate extensively. Since the production of culture is often expected to support the ideas and values connected to the idea of nation, a critical response from the cultural field is an urgency of our time. Translocal Express. Jubilee Edition takes place in parallel with the celebrations of the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, aiming to turn attention to alternative ways how to think about society in the era of global democracy as a counterperspective to the narrow nationalist mindsets that are dominant in contemporary Estonia. Speakers: Sezgin Boynik (Istanbul), Charles Esche (Eindhoven), Annie Fletcher (Amsterdam/Eindhoven), Minna Henriksson (Helsinki/Istanbul), Flo Kasearu (Tallinn), Karolis Klimka (Vilnius), Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen (Helsinki), Eleonore de Montesquiou (Berlin/Tallinn), Joanna Rajkowska (Warsaw), Petri Saarikko (Helsinki), Maria- Kristiina Soomre (Tallinn), Marko Stamenkovic (Amsterdam/Belgrade), Tomas Tomilinas (Vilnius).
