To this Venice Biennale, which is titled ‚All the World’s Futures', 'Saving Face’ is an exceptional interactive contribution, reflecting on our networked society experience. 
Shortly after the Venice show, ‘Saving Face’ will travel to Beijing, for the new museum Beijing Culture and Art Center’s opening performance, taking place on December 26, 2015.

MEETING RITUAL
Lancel/Maat often work in the context of today’s explosively growing Chinese mega-cities. Here social cohesion has changed radically, ruled by social technologies and digitale platforms. Working in China and Europe, the artists  experiment with new meeting-rituals for the Smart City. They deconstruct and turn around control technologies and sensory perception, to facilitate intimate meeting experiences. 

'CAN I TOUCH YOU ONLINE?" 
'Saving Face' is a small, intimate ritual to reflect on big techno-social changes. 

'YOUR FACE AS A SOCIAL INTERFACE'. 
'Saving Face' is a poetic ‘meeting-through-touching ritual’. The ritual includes an interactive city sculpture with a camera connected to an urban screen and face-recognition-technologies. Through an experimental, socially shared bio-feedback system, participants caress their own faces, to connect online with family, friends and strangers world-wide. They become tangible and visible for each other in a relational process, a ‘social sculpture’; inviting them to endlessly meet, caress, mirror and merge.”

Saving Face emerged from artistic research that is conducted at Delft University of Technology in the context of Lancel’s PhD trajectory (Promotores: Prof. dr.  Frances Brazier, Dr. Caroline Nevejan).
