        EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL 1997
                7-11th May 1997

We would like to warmly invite you to send in your
contributions to the 10th European Media Art Festival
(EMAF), which is to take place in Osnabrueck between 7th and
11th May 1997. The festival will internationally
bring together film and videomakers, multimedia and
performance artists, media theorists, journalists and a
young and interested general public.

In order to guarantee the best set of conditions for
presenting the festival, and due to a series of building
measures taking place during Autumn at the main festival
venue, it has been important to retime the festival, pushing
it back from September to May. This change of dates
also affects the successfully commenced co-operation with
the Film, Video and Multimedia Festival VIPER (Lucerne)
which unfortunately cannot take place in the planned form of
a competition.

Film & Video

Despite the short period of time between last years and this
years festival, a invitation to participate in the
international selection programme will once again take
place. The festival commission will view all contributions
and make selections for the programme.

The Deadline for Registration is 3rd March 1997 !!!!!

At the EMAF, the jury of film journalists will be presenting
the German Film Critic's Prize for the best German
experimental film or video production. Additionally,
the presentation of an award for an international production
is planned.

We will also be using the 10th EMAF as an occasion for
presenting a retrospective of the prize winners from former
years. This review will present an outstanding survey of the
trends and developments in German experimental film and
video of this decade.

Retrospective

This years presentation of work is dedicated to Stan
Vanderbeek, a pioneer of video and computer film.
Vanderbeek, who worked on abstract films in the '50's, and
who began to take advantage of the new potential in "modern"
video technology in the early '60's in an artistic fashion,
can rightfully be described as the father of today's techno
light-shows.
As early as in the '60's he worked with multiple
projections, which reached its zenith in the form of film
and slide projections in a purpose built movie-drome.

Hong Kong

A city and a pheneomona is increasingly becoming the focal
point of media interest. One month before the take over of
Hong Kong by the PR of China in June 1997, the festival will
be presenting artists and their projects, as well as
providing information about the living and working
conditions in the art scene to be found on this
island.

International Student Forum

Centrally placed, with its cafe as a meeting place, the
chance of free accomodation, and of course its big party,
the Student Forum offers a blend of particular atmospheres
for student visitors to the festival.

In the form of a set programme, the Student Forum presents a
broad spectrum of work by students from abroad and at home,
whilst providing information about training opportunities.
The evening of performance builds a particular highlight as
a part of this programme.

Students from all disciplines are invited to send in their
current productions to the festival.

Exhibition 7th - 25th May 1997

As in former years, the "Kunsthalle Dominikanerkirche" acts
as the  central venue for the Electronic Cafe, as well as
the comprehensive exhibition of video and computer
installations.
A building with a particular blend of character, it is the
perfect venue for the realisation of artistic concepts
spanning between sculpturalelements, projections and network
systems.

Internet, CD-Rom, Networks

The internet and multimedia are areas associated with a
great degree of hope and utopian potential, both in terms of
artistic utility, as well as being the areas which have
defined and determined the media discusion over the last few
years. Beyond the bounds of normal commercial
structures the EMAF will be presenting a forum for
demonstrating and debating artistic projects within the
network systems and on CD-Rom.

The Congress

The language of images, in the process of being raised to
the level of a scientific discipline in the form of
Visualism, has, since the very beginning of the EMAF, been
the leitmotif of the media-universal debate due to take
place here. This years's congress will examine and explore
these disciplines in an intensive manner.

Call for Statements

When contrasting positions clash, as in the case of the EMAF
in 1996, where Prof. Joseph Weizenbaum and the Australian
body and cyber artist Stelarc detailed and defined their
widely differing approaches, theory comes to life. Whilst
the computer theorist Weizenbaum stood up with scientific
vehemence to tendencies within both theory and art which
characterise humans as badly constructed machines, the
artist Stelarc saw the potential towards a strategy for
increasing and improving the capabilities of the human body
in the very creation of links between man and machine.

We would like to invite you to send in contributions in the
form of discussion papers or essays relating to this or any
further range of subjects. Selected contributions will be
published in our festival catalogue as well as in the
Internet Forum.
