 Los Angeles--global center of public practices by artists and
collaborative
groups--is the dynamic setting for Otis' MFA in Public Practice (
http://www.otis.edu/gpp) with studio facilities in the historic 18th Street
Art Center. From the beginning, students are encouraged to find themselves
as emerging professionals within this vast cultural and spatial geography.
Suzanne Lacy, the renowned artist, educator, theorist of socially engaged
public art and author of the influential *Mapping the Terrain: New Genre
Public Art*, directs the Program.

As the only program in the Southern California region dedicated exclusively
to providing artists with advanced skills for working in the public sphere,
the program focuses on both collaborative and individual art production.
Entering students design a unique educational plan to fit their interests,
with the latitude to experience both community and studio contexts. Public
practice – also called participatory art, community art, public art,
situational art or social sculpture – can consist of a variety of media
including video, performance, drawing, photography, sculpture and web-based
projects. These artists are reinventing the traditional media-specific way
of thinking about art making.

Students start with a collaborative project led by artists such as Andrea
Bowers, Suzanne Lacy and Rick Lowe, which results in an exhibition or public
presentation. During this process, they meet and interact with recognized
artists such as Mel Chin and Sam Durant, and network with artists, critics,
and curators from around the world. Students travel individually or as a
group as part of their curriculum, exploring cultures in diverse locations
such as a small farming town in California's San Joaquin Valley or
hurricane-ravaged New Orleans.

Each participant's learning plan includes a menu of skills, classes in
different art media, theories of public practice, and internships with
artists such as Mario Ybarra , Edgar Arceneaux and Kim Abeles. Their
self-defined curriculum provides opportunities for one-on-one studies with
artists such as Rachel Rosenthal, L.A. Urban Rangers, and others across the
Southern California region. Students can take classes within Otis' graduate
programs in writing, fine arts, and graphic design, and in other
departments. The full range of Otis shops, faculty, courses, and library is
available for students' production.

Visiting artists and faculty provide rigorous and supportive one-on-one and
group critiques. Recent visitors include S.A. Bachman, Nao Bustamonte, Mel
Chin, Teddy Cruz, Sam Durant, Future Farmers, Miriam Ghani, Fritz Haeg,
Grant Kester, Nav Haq, Willie Herrón, Dolores Huerta, Olga Koumoundoros,
Karen Moss, Nobuho Nagasawa, Tone Olaf Nielsen, Martha Rosler, Temporary
Services, Carol Stakenas, Sally Tallant, Claude Willey, and Tirdad Zolghadr.

Founded in Los Angeles in 1918, Otis College of Art and Design prepares
diverse students of art and design to enrich the world through their
creativity, their skill, and their vision. The College offers an
interdisciplinary education for 1200 full-time students, awarding BFA
degrees in advertising, architecture/landscape/interiors, digital media,
fashion design, illustration, graphic design, product design, painting,
