*Culture and Sustainability CLUJ CARAVAN Focus on Social Creativity 13-15 November 2013* *Wednesday, 13.11.2013, 11.00-13.00* *Social Creativity. Introduction to local experiences in Cluj*PAC â Cluj Autonomous Market, The Butterfly Garden, Save RoÈia MontanÄ Campaign, Kitchen Stories/Mobile Kitchen, Cluj Hub, Pata RÃt IT Cluster
*PAC â Cluj Autonomous Market | Camelia Badea & Alex BoguÈ**The Autonomous Market of Cluj* functions on the "gift economy" principle, which states that goods and services are offered without an explicit agreement or expectations of a reward. Ideally, these exchanges already take place voluntarily in a community and they help on building up social relationships. Not everything is resumed to obtaining a social advantage or profit, the majority of exchanges in a society work outside the market economy, and are based on goodwill and cooperation. Thus, our goal is to meet up every month under the name of the Autonomous Market of Cluj in order to create a money free and social division free SPACE. Here, we will have free workshops, free goods and services and we will be enjoying a warm meal together under the aegis âFood not Bombsâ.

The Romanian context for the development of urban gardening as a form of civic engagement is very different from the ones of other European countries. The general practice of urban community gardening as a catalyst for civic action is little acknowledged or encouraged at local or national level. The few initiatives are rather present on social media groups. Hence there are few initiatives that explore the role of urban gardening and its importance within community development activities and the many ways in which urban agriculture can contribute to the creation of an active community. The Urban Community Garden project aims at promoting urban gardens as a framework for public involvement in community life. The objectives identified in order to sustain the project's goal are the set up of a community urban garden in Cluj Napoca, the organization events dedicated to civic engagement in urban gardening, the empowerment of people willing to work on urban gardens and the involvement of local authorities in Cluj ÂNapoca in creating a local policy on urban gardening.

Over 2000 people live there, deep under the poverty line. They work mostly recycling the waste on the city dump. This community is so segregated they are most of the time invisible to citizens and policymakers both. For the past 10 years there have been several processes started, with the intention to connect the Pata Rat community to the city. *Pata Rat IT Cluster* is one of the initiatives in the community.
*Cluj Hub | Cristian DascÄlu*Cluj Hub is a meeting place, work, play and creativeness garden, with friendly hammocks in the garden and a friendly office, which hosts initiatives that inspire ideas that move people.
http://clujhub.ro/ *Kitchen Stories/Mobile Kitchen | Mixer Group (Ana Botezatu & Corina Bucea)*Mixer is an artistic group interested in combining the documentation of social phenomena with elements of investigation and adaptation of the imaginary around them. Kitchen Stories is a series of events that Mixer organized recently, bringing together the simple act of cooking and eating together between strangers, and combining it with presentations, talks, film screenings, etc. The Mobile Kitchen is a self-made minimal construction that has the main utilities of a kitchen and that acts as an open space cooking space. The kitchen is a modular space that can be installed anywhere in the city, encouraging participants to share the experience and interact with others, while also learning about cooking and its diverse instances.

Rosia Montana is a village in the Apuseni Mountains, Transylvania region, Romania, and itâs the oldest documented mining settlement in Romania (1881 years). Alburnus Maior is a grassroots NGO based in Rosia Montana village founded in September 2000 by the local people and the land owners in Rosia Montana. It regroups 300 families of peasants in Rosia Montana and neighboring villages to oppose the largest gold mine proposal in Europe which entails the destruction of Rosia Montana and its surroundings. Alburnus Maior opposes the mining project proposed by Rosia Montana Gold Corporation on environmental, social, cultural and economical grounds. In 2000, Alburnus Maior and approximately 40 Romania NGOs gathered in Rosia Montana where they took a joint statement regarding the Rosia Montana project. This gave birth to the Save RoÅia MontanÄ Campaign â the biggest environmental movement in Romania. Resistance to the project has since spread across Romania. During over 10 years of resistance, Alburnus Maior, through the Save Rosia Montana Campaign has successfully mobilized thousands of people and has so far kept the mine from being realized.

The meeting proposes a joint reflection on the different aspects of culture and sustainability: the resilience of the arts sector and other value-based sectors in a climate of austerity and value-shifts; the contribution of culture to a more responsible use of natural resources; the connection between access to culture and individual well-being; the need for sustainable alternative models for different social and cultural practices etc. The discussions take place in a series of public talks and other events on the topic of /Culture &Sustainability/ that Balkan Express has stirred throughout the past year.
The meeting in Cluj focuses on culture and social innovation. How can culture contribute to imagining new models of social interaction and organising? How can we as culture professionals contribute to a more fair, cohesive and responsible society? What is the legacy of our work? And, nonetheless, how can the cultural sector become more sustainable itself? Can we imagine within our sector and in connection with other sectors alternative ways of operation and organisation? We look to answer these questions through discussions and presentations of best practices.
