THE SPIRIT OF WORK at the Biennale in Turin
19.4. - 19. 5. 2002The project is an ongoing research on the cultural and social dimensions of the concept of work. After Leipzig and Berlin, the third station is now the Biennale BIG TORINO 2002.
The City of Turin is in a phase of new orientation. The traditionally strong sector of automobile production by Fiat seems to face an unsecure future. As we got to know in an interview with Lidia Tricomi from the office for economical studies of the industrial association, the day is near, when there will be no more cars built in Turin. Only Administration, distribution of services and research will remain after a process of de-regulation. Production will move out of the European Union . The coming Olympic games in Turin in 2006 awakens hope for new employment. The main investments are made to improve the accessibility of the city by a high speed train line, and also to relieve the inner city traffic by a metro. In addition, new economic impulses are expected by the promotion of tourism. In this strategy the Biennale also has it’s place.
But work is not any more what is was before. De-regulation and the growing influence of services have left signs in social life. The change can be observed right here. The social unrest and the general strike in Italy were an actual background at the beginning of the biennale in Turin. Following the statement of Mauro Durando, who observes actual developments at the job market in the region of Piemont, the flexibility of work contracts and the increasing number of part time job offers de-motivate low qualified young people to play an active role in professional life.
For the duration of the Biennale RG opens a communication point at the atrium of the faculty of human sciences of the university of Turin. The Spirit of Work in Torino asks questions about the personal meaning of work, and creative carrier models. The discussion is about a change of the general understanding of "work".
On 16th of may at 5 pm there will be a debate in the arena at BIG TORINO 2002.
ARBEITSGEIST auf der Turin Biennale

Das Projekt erforscht die kulturellen und sozialen Dimensionen des Arbeitsbegriffes. Nach Leipzig und Berlin ist die Biennale BIG TORINO 2002 nun die dritte Station.
Turin befindet sich gegenwärtig in einer Phase der Neuorientierung. Die traditionelle Automobilproduktion sieht einer ungewissen Zukunft entgegen. Wie wir in einem Interview mit Lidia Tricomi vom Büro für Wirtschaftsforschung des Industriellenverbandes erfahren, wird der Tag kommen, an dem kein Auto mehr in Turin gebaut werden wird. Nach einem Prozess der Deregulierung werden nur die Verwaltung, Serviceleistungen und Forschung verbleiben. Die Produktion wird außerhalb der Europäischen Union verlagert. Grosse Hoffnungen auf neue Arbeitsplätze weckt die anstehende Ausrichtung der Olympischen Spiele im Jahr 2006. Bedeutende Investitionen, wie Anschluss an den internationalen Hochgeschwindigkeitsverkehr, und der Bau einer Metro erfolgen, um die Verkehrssituation zu verbessern. Neue wirtschaftliche Impulse werden aber auch durch die Förderung des Tourismus erwartet. In dieser Strategie hat auch die Ausrichtung der Biennale ihren Platz. Arbeit ist nicht mehr, wie sie war. Deregulierung und Wachsender Einfluss des Dienstleistungssektors haben ihre gesellschaftlichen Spuren hinterlassen. Der Wandel kann hier vor Ort beobachtet werden. Der Arbeitskampf und Generalstreik in Italien sind der aktuelle Hintergrund am Beginn der Biennale. Wenn man den Ausführungen von Mauro Durando folgt, der neue Entwicklungen am Arbeitsmarkt im Auftrag der Region Piemont erforscht, hat die Flexibilisierung der Arbeitsverträge und die Zunahme von Teilzeitarbeit dazu geführt, dass vor allem junge schlecht qualifizierte Menschen demotiviert werden, eine aktive Rolle im Arbeitsleben zu übernehmen.
Für die Dauer der Biennale eröffnet die REINIGUNGSGESELLSCHAFT an der humanwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität in Turin einen Kommunikations- und Informationsstand. ARBEITSGEIST in Turin fragt nach der persönlichen Bedeutung von Arbeit und neuen Berufsbildern. Es geht um die Veränderung des allgemeinen Verständnisses von „Arbeit":
Am 16. Mai findet in der Arena der Turin Biennale BIG 2002 ein Forum zu ARBEITSGEIST statt.
