info: MoneyNations

The concept of Eurocentrism has been alluded to in the past years again and
again as a reprimand for the conception of a hegemonic Western culture.
Traditionally European identity was established in opposition to the "Big
Others": Africa, USA, Japan, Asia and the Orient. This identity was defined
by focussing on the particularities of its cultural traditions, in order to
depreciate those of the "Others" at the same time. In the first part of the
project initiated by the Shedhalle Zurich, the redefinition of the "big
Other", the former Eastern Bloc, in relation to the constitution of a
Western European Union as a "fortress", and its contemporary economic
policy were of main interest.
The aim of MoneyNations is to broaden already existing critical actions
like the "Kein Mensch ist illegal" (Nobody is illegal) campaign, which
developed from the Documenta X or the "Innenstadtaktionen" (Innercity
Actions), which grew from the critical cultural field in Germany.
MoneyNations@access unlike the other projects and campaigns, focussed on an
active dialogue between Middle, Central and Southern European producers, to
discuss the question of representational politics in the perception of the
so called EAST, and its meaning for the construction of the border, new
nationalism and low-wage production locations.
MoneyNations was anounced via Internet. The textual and visual
contributions, as well as reports form the "correspondent net", are
published in the WebZine http://www.moneynations.ch and in a special
MoneyNations printedition ?The Correspondent". The exchange process brought
about video productions for the MoneyNationsTV network, as well as
photographic work, installations, theoretical texts and reports. The
theoretical approaches were part of the 'Border Economies' conference in
Zurich.

MoneyNations 2000
During the last year the project was continued in some of the cities
participating in several meetings and conferences. It will be represented
again in the Kunsthalle Exnergasse, in october 2000 in Vienna. The
geographical and political situation of Vienna and Austria will be a
starting point for new discussions about the dynamics of EU-normalization
and integration processes. Before this background our outlook for the
future of the project is to reflect much more on the emerge of racist
politics and gendered geographies inside and outside the EU, as well as on
the shifting concepts of center and periphery, the formal/informal etc.
