Dear Syndicate, morning-after-remorse, zut, but never mind, for good, constructive reasons: perhaps brutally saying there's (practically) "no art" here is not the most constructive way of going about nurturing some, and perhaps it would be more constructive to say that institutional weight means that glimmering emerging energies are well and truly elsewhere... and perhaps this can tie in more constructively with situations like Edi Muka's / Edi Rama's... The "small corners of small structures" should have read "small corners of big structures" - there are some interesting things going on at ZKM, and one can catch up on them in particular by hanging out with the all-nighters, those driven by their art (and deadlines, but sometimes the two converge). Essentially, though, the goal of this mail is to forward the following info, a necessary counterweight to our moans and groans about ludicrous Versailles-come-World-Cup acultural celebrations - this garage, which recently hosted an Atau Tanaka concert and other things, seems to be turning into a fairly vibrant arena of activity. Wouldn't want to be caught wallowing in self-pity... à bientôt SJN ---------- De : sylvie astie+buro <airfrais@club-internet.fr> A : buro-liste@easynet.fr Objet : BURO.2 (paris): PAN SONIC-RYOJI IKEDA Date : samedi 13 juin 1998 04:13 (followed by english version) BURO.2 est la prochaine soirée organisée par buro et consacrée aux nouvelles musiques électroniques : PAN SONIC (fin.) RYOJI IKEDA (jap.) --- RYOJI IKEDA "minus is plus" Ryoji Ikeda seems to have constructed his ascetic, minimalistic electronic music around that statement. Pure frequencies, sound waves and simple rythms are the only ingredients of his universe of total epuration. Although everthing could only be agression and discomfort in this misuse of digital media, his music brings out quiet atmospheres, some kind of invitation to a peacefull journey, from signal to noise. This show of the 26th of june will be the first solo show of Ryoji Ikeda in France. (As part of the Dumb Type collective he has done a couple of shows during the last Festival d'automne ) PAN SONIC The iceberg of the minimalistic techno scene. They have recorded two albums, a few singles, many parallel projects, remixes and astonishing collaborations (Bjork, KLF, Merzbow,Einsturzende Neubaten, Alan Vega). The finnish duo, militant of an analogic esthetic, bring their sounds out of a TR808 and rebuilt frequency generators producing oscillations ultra-sounds, beats combined in progressive structures hammered by brutal rythmic interventions. It is live that their music brings out all its strength, leaving a great part to improvisation ; playing with their machines randomness, their shows become amazingly disconstructed. ----------
