Syndicate: We can do it again !!!! |
Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1999 15:55:00 -0500 Sender: ZAMIR-CHAT-L MAILING LIST <ZAMIR-CHAT-L@LISTS.IGC.ORG> From: "Wam Kat" <wam@MIR.ORG> In 1992 we were able with some people from ARK (Anti War Campaign Croatia) to build up in a few weeks an international network of volunteers who were willing to come to Croatia and Bosnia and help in the refugee camps there. We basically play with children, worked with the problem of women, organised workshop, schools, and grassroor humanitarian aid. I would like to ask if there are any people out there who would like to do this again, this time in Albania, Macedonia and maybe even in Montenegro. No doubt, this is a great undertaking and I applaud you for it. Question, though: once these people get out of danger, and possibly to places of exile -- is anyone going to care about them then? Several times per week I sit with Bosnian kids from all three ethnic groups. In a city with huge South Slavic communities, you'd think there'd be more than four or five of us altogether, and more than one or two at a time. Sadly, there's not. Most people (I'm speaking generally, not at all to you) would rather write political jeremiads than get their hands dirty. There's no glory in heading to a decrepit Chicago middle school and play basketball with kids who flinch every time an airplane passes overhead. This is where you lose faith in the NGOs, the people named "Smith" who write checks to take care of their conscience. We've got sixty kids and only two adults (I still have trouble putting myself in that catagory ;-)) to spend time with them. Anyone in the area who IS interested in volunteering, e-mail Julija Strojvno at strojvnoj@aol.com.
