Cultural Democracy in a Digital World - Symposium & Workshop
11th June 2016, 10am - 4pm
Access Space, 3-7 Sidney Street, Sheffield, S1 4RG, UK
In 1986, a conference gathered in Sheffield to discuss a manifesto proposing cultural democracy. Cultural democracy is a very simple yet powerful idea. It proposes that democracy is never merely "political" and that in a media-drenched society we need to have equal access to the means of cultural input as well as cultural outputs. Who gets to tell the story determines in large part the nature of the story that the rest of us hear. Thirty years later the ideas behind cultural democracy are still powerful and timely. We are gathering at Access Space in Sheffield, UK on June 11 2016 to see if we now have the tools to turn these ideas into action.
More info about the context for this event can be found at the Access Space website -
