Cory Doctorow:
O'Reilly Media have taken a ton of criticism for attempting to enforce a
service mark against a nonprofit group in Ireland that wanted to have
"Web 2.0" conference. O'Reilly exec Dale Dougherty coined the term Web
2.0, and O'Reilly used it for a line of very successful conferences
chaired by Boing Boing's business manager, John Battelle (I've been a
speaker at Web 2.0 as well, and found the con to be an amazing,
eye-opening experience).
The dispute seems to have been resolved amicably. O'Reilly has
apologized for sending in lawyers against the con before speaking to
them, and has granted the con permission to use "Web 2.0" in its name.
However, O'Reilly maintains that Web 2.0 is a service mark of their
company when applied to conferences, and that other conferences that
want to call themselves "Web 2.0" will have to get O'Reilly's permission
-- they defend this as part of the sound business practice of defending
a trademark.
Trademarks are intended to protect consumers by ensuring that goods and
services aren't misleadingly labeled. A trademark holder, say, "Coke,"
gets the right to sue companies that use the word "Coke" in their
products and services in a way that would lead the public to believe
that Coke was behind them.
But trademarks aren't "property" -- they aren't words owned by
companies. They're the ability to use the courts to protect a company's
customers. That's a pretty good idea: the public deserves to be
protected from misleading marketing.
The question is whether using "Web 2.0" in a conference name is
misleading: will the average person who hears about a Web 2.0 event
assume that it must be put on by O'Reilly, or will she assume that it's
just an event about the Web 2.0 technology and business-practices that
O'Reilly defined?
O'Reilly has an amazing, wonderful gift for popularizing hard ideas and
for explaining abstruse technology in catchy ways. "Web 2.0" is only one
of O'Reilly's many accomplishments, which started with the publication
of the first user documentation for Unix, and has continued through many
iterations of excellent, world-changing ideas and memes.
The downside of creating amazing, industry-shaking ideas is that they
become embedded in the popular consciousness. While the digerati know
that O'Reilly originated Web 2.0, the idea is so infectious that it's
just become part of the fabric of the industry. One of the things that
makes O'Reilly's ideas so great is that they go on to be part of the
infrastructure, invisible and huge and powerful.
But that means that O'Reilly's ideas are also not uniquely associated
with O'Reilly. When I hear "emerging technology," I think of more than
the excellent "O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference" (even though
I've volunteered for every ETECH programming jury so far). When I hear
"Open Source," I think of more than the wonderful "O'Reilly Open Source
Conferences" (where I've spoken on several occasions). And when I hear
"Web 2.0," I think of more than the brilliant "O'Reilly Web 2.0 Conference."
Which is by way of saying that I'm not convinced that there is a
trademark here. In O'Reilly's latest post about this, they quote my pal
and colleague John Battelle saying "Remember, Web 2.0 is also about
having a business that works. And not protecting your trademarks is
simply bad business practice." But while that's true -- Boing Boing has
on one occasion asked someone publishing a really similar blog also
called "Boing Boing," with similar graphics, to consider changing its
name -- it's not the whole story.
The O'Reilly Conferences' unique selling proposition is that they
rewrite the rules of the industry and coalesce meaning out of the stew
of ideas floating around the field. If you're going to name the next
direction the world will take, you have to be prepared for the world to
take that direction. Industry shifts become public property -- or
rather, things that are privately controlled can't shift a diverse industry.
That means that O'Reilly needs to choose whether it's going to retain
control the word "Web 2.0" for conferences, or retain control over the
shifts that created the Web 2.0 phenomenon.
I think being able to call the shots is more important than being able
to own those calls.

séminaire, L'angoisse, tant par rapport à la vulgarisation freudienne
relative à l'irréductible point de butée du Penisneid que par rapport à
l'énoncé ultérieur de Lacan selon lequel « La Femme n'existe pas ».

Collectif des Auteurs-Réalisateurs pour la Défense des Oeuvres
Cardo et les réalisateurs attaqués en diffamation par la SCAM remercient
chaleureusement :
-Les 639 auteurs-réalisateurs membres de la SCAM signataires de la
pétition qui ont manifesté leur solidarité avec leurs leurs confrères
dans un procès inédit où une société d’auteur s’attaquait à des auteurs
et à leur droit d’exercice de la critique.
-Nos amis d'ADDOC et de la SRF qui se sont portés à nos côtés et nous

We welcome the opportunity to host an artist in residence at
the Space Sciences Laboratory at University of California,
Berkeley. Working alongside scientists and educators, the
successful applicant will have the opportunity to build
their professional career through a sustained period of
research and experimentation.
This initiative is funded by UC Berkeley and Arts Council
England's International Artists Fellowship Programme with
support from Leonardo Network and NASA. The selected artist
will receive specialist support and funds for practice-based
research, accommodation, food, travel and a small stipend
whilst at UC Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory.
This is a continuation of the Leonardo co sponsored program
which
brought artists Liliane Lijn and Semi-Conductor to UC
Berkeley Space
Sciences Lab in 2005.

Following the success of the workshop on Computational Models of
Creativity in the Arts held at Goldsmiths College, University of London
in May 2006 a special issue of the journal Digital Creativity is now
being prepared.
Call for Participation
This special issue will address the use of computational systems in the
fine and performing arts, literature, design and animation as well as the
associated fields of aesthetics, cognitive science, art history and cultural
theory. It especially invites those involved in the computational analysis
and modelling of creative behaviour to contribute.
It is intended that this call should interest the widest possible
constituency. However a very broad list of (nonexclusive) descriptors
might include:
the application of computational and generative methodologies in
the arts and related creative disciplines
computational approaches to creativity, cognition and aesthetics
the application of artificial intelligence and artificial life
the application of evolutionary and adaptive systems
cultural applications of computing and digital electronics in general
Deadline and Timetable
The deadline for full papers is 14 August 2006. They should be sent
to the guest co-editors as editable documents attached to an email
with the subject "CMCA Journal Submission". Earlier email
correspondence with the guest co-editors is welcome.

Piksel[1] is an annual event for artists and developers working with free
and open source audiovisual software. Part workshop, part festival, it is
organised in Bergen, Norway, by the Bergen Centre for Electronic Arts
(BEK) [2] and involves participants from more than a dozen countries
exchanging ideas, coding, presenting art and software projects, doing
workshops, performances and discussions on the aesthetics and politics of
free and open source software.
This years event - Piksel06 – continues the exploration of audiovisual
code and it's myriad of expressions, but also brings in open hardware as a
new focus area. At Piksel06 we will expand the exhibition part and build
upon the open
hardware theme, which represents a potential for a new paradigm shift of
vital importance for independent artistic expression in the digital
domain.
Piksel06 is done in collaboration with HKS art centre[3] which will be the
main location for this years events. Piksel is organised by BEK and a
community of core participants including members of collectives dyne.org,
goto10.org, sustainablesource.net, hackitectura.net, riereta.net,
drone.ws, gephex.org and others.

open CALL for PARTICIPATION
The previous Piksel events has primarily focused on live art/audiovisual
performance and interactive installations, but for Piksel06 we also
introduce open hardware and hardware hacking as new themes. For the
exhibition and other parts of the program we are interested in submissions
in the following categories:
1. Installations
Projects related to the open hardware theme including but not restricted
to: circuit bending, reverse engineering, repurposing, modding and DIY
electronics preferably programmed by and running on free and open source
software.
2. Audiovisual performance
Live art realised by the use of free and open source software. We
specially encourage live coding and DIY hardware projects to apply.
3. Software/Hardware
Innovative DIY hardware and audiovisual software tools or software art
released under an open licence.

Saison 2006/07 -> Arts numériques pour installations interactives,
spectacle vivant, danse contemporaine, théâtre, musique...
Le LABO DES FÉES AU SERVICE DES ARTS NUMÉRIQUES
Les Fées appartiennent à ce monde invisible qui nous entoure, créatrices
d'univers féeriques, voire de l'univers... Notre réflexion porte sur les
interactions qu'il existe entre notre environnement et notre existence
corporelle au sein de celui-ci pour tenter de rendre perceptible
l'invisible. Les nouvelles technologies de l'information et des
communications (NTIC) sont explorées au sein de notre LABO des Fées, et
mis au services des Arts numériques pour mettre en évidence notre
interaction dans ces mondes virtuels. L'occasion de repenser notre
propre existence dans notre monde réel.
Le LABO des Fées met à disposition des artistes qui le souhaitent le
matériel informatique (station, vidéo projecteur, capteurs, caméras...),
les compétences techniques et artistiques pour co-produire des
installations numériques interactives sonores et/ou visuelles, des
chorégraphies, des performances musicales ou des spectacles vivants
intégrant ces nouvelles technologies... Il n'est pas nécessaire pour
l'artiste d'avoir une pratique et maîtrise de ces technologies pour les
utiliser ou les expérimenter.
Un LABO expérimental
Avec nos divers partenaires (plasticiens, musiciens, chorégraphes,
danseurs, informaticiens), nous mettons en place une cellule de veille
technologique et artistique autour de la recherche, de la formation et
du développement de solutions techologiques. Nous expérimentons des
voies nouvelles d'expression au sein de différentes disciplines :
DANSE CONTEMPORAINE
Captation du geste en temps réel pour génération d'images et sons
accoustiques ou numériques
SPECTACLE VIVANT
Réflexion sur l'habillage numérique du décor (vidéo et son) et sur
l'interactivité de l'acteur sur celui-ci.
MUSIQUES CONTEMPORAINES
Recherche de la relation entre le son acoustique et numérique, captation
du geste et du son acoustique et génération numérique
ARTS NUMERIQUES
Développement de solutions techniques et informatique pour installations
interactives.
Tout au cours de la saison, FEES D*HIVER, et son LABO, organisent des
rencontres pour présenter ses travaux expérimentaux.

The Media Art Friesland Festival 2006, which takes place from September
the 13th till October the 1st, is the tenth edition of the festival.
This anniversary will be celebrated with a special and large programme.
Recent work from all over the world will be shown in film and video
screenings, presentations, exhibitions, conferences and performances.
Do you want to participate in the 10th edition of the festival? Media
Art Friesland asks all artists and students to send in their work;
video, film, cd-rom and internet projects, installations and performances.

Programme of the 10th Media Art Friesland Festival
The Video Salon presents an international program with a high-quality
selection of recent experimental short films and videos, animations, new
forms of narration and documentation, accompanied by special programmes.
Multimedia installations by graduation students of Dutch Academies of
Art, Media Technology and Design are presented in the exhibition Young
Talent and the exhibition Spotlight shows work by artists worldwide.
In the Artist in Residence program young talented artists are given the
possibility for personal development and presentation of work made in
Friesland.
The Computer Gallery presents non-linear works on CD-Rom, DVD and
Internet by international artists.
Sound Vision is filled with multimedia stage shows as well as other live
acts that have become part of audiovisual arts.
The Experience gives insight into current media trends and projects. The
cross over of various genres and different disciplines bridge the
conventional divide between art, science and technology. Experts answer
questions on cultural understanding and present training concepts.
Artists, visual designers and developers show their work. In
co-operation with Dutch Media Colleges the Experience presents the
various positions and offers a blast of information and the possibility
of critical discussion with the audience.
The International Student Competition stimulates students to explore
their innovative and creative skills. An independent jury of experts
decides who wins the prize of 500 euro.

for computer, based art, Lunds Konsthall, Suède.
Call for entries. Electrohype 2006 Ð the fourth Nordic biennial for computer
based art
Deadline July 3rd 2006 Ð material via ordinary mail should be postmarked by
this date.
Electrohype is pleased to announce this call for entries for the exhibition
that will be a follow up to the previous large Electrohype exhibitions
in 2000,
2002 and 2004.
The exhibition will take place in Lunds Konsthall from December 9th to
January
7th.
This year the exhibition will be in both a new venue and a new city. Lunds
Konsthall is located in the central part of Lund, in the south of
Sweden. Lund
is approximately 20 km north of Malmo where previous Electrohype exhibitions
has been presented.
Lunds Konsthall, built in 1957, is a beautiful exhibition spaces in late
functionalist architecture style. The exhibition space has a flexible
semi-open
layout with a total exhibition surface of approximately 600 - 800 square
meters. The annual number of visitors in Lunds Konsthall is 95 000.
The exhibition will present works by 8 Ð 10 artists or artist groups. The
concept of the Electrohype biennial is that it shall be a Nordic
exhibition but
this does not exclude works by artists from outside the Nordic region.
To give
the exhibition a broad perspective we are usually working with a
50/50model, 50
percent from the Nordic region and 50 percent from the rest of the world.
Since the decision to realize the exhibition was made just recently we
have not
yet decided on a theme or topic for this exhibition. This also explains the
short deadline.
In addition to the main exhibition there will also be an exhibition with the
topic Òelectronic art in public spaceÓ at the Museum of Sketches in Lund, a
museum dedicated to public art. Most of the artworks in the museum are
in the
form of models, visualizations and sketches. This exhibition will be
presented
during the same period as the main exhibition. This call, and the
application
form, does not include this exhibition, however if you have knowledge of, or
have realized a project you think we should know of feel free to send us a
short description
(maximum 1/2 page) and link to a project page. Please write ÒpublicÓ in the
subject line.

What kind of art are we looking for?
Electrohype has since the start in 1999 focused on what we choose to call
computer based art. Art that runs of computers and utilizes the capacity
of the
computer to mix various media, allow interaction with the audience, or
machines
interacting with each others etc. in other words art that can not be
transferred to ÒtraditionalÓ linear media. This might seem as a narrow
approach
but we have discovered that it gives us a better focus on a genre that in no
way is narrow.
We are not looking for ÒstraightÓ video art (even if it is edited on a
computer) or still images rendered on computers and other material that
refers
to more ÒtraditionalÓ media forms. Forms were the traditional tools have
been
replaced with computers and software.

Financial
We are still working on the fundraising for the exhibition. We will
hopefully
have final numbers sometime during this summer. We will have to adjust the
final selection of works for exhibition according to the financial
situation.
This is unfortunate but it is also necessary, art is beautiful but financial
reality is harsh.
We will encourage everyone submitting material to look for possibilities for
local funding to help cover costs for transport, travel and rent of
technical
equipment.
In previous exhibitions we have managed to keep a high level both in
artistic
content and exhibition design, even on a modest budget. It is therefore very
important for us to avoid unpleasant surprises, so please keep this in mind
when filling out the various posts in the form, especially when it comes to
technical requirements, transport weight etc.
We are looking forward to see new and interesting works of art.

Jennifer Allora (b. 1974, USA) and Guillermo Calzadilla (b.1971, Cuba)
have been working together since 1995. In much their collaborative work,
through a practice that includes video, sculpture, photography, and
works that evoke possibilities of communication, critique, play and
humour intertwine. Starting from their individual backgrounds, both
scientific and artistic, they zoom in on current urban, economic,
political, aesthetic and historical systems.
Puerto Rico, where the artists live and work, is a hybrid Caribbean
culture with a colonial legacy that continues to flourish in the present
day under the auspices of the United States. Despite its tropical
location and the abundant natural beauty of the surrounding region,
Puerto Rico is an island where heavy industry, commerce and space
exploration prevail. It is this unusual diversity that informs the
subject matter and approach behind Allora and Calzadilla’s body of work,
which is often specific to the geographical location of its production
and display. The artists are known to often involve viewers and local
communities, thus defining political and social issues and attempting to
link geographically distant locations, conceptually as well as physically.
In their photographic series “Land Mark (Footprints)”, 2001-2004, they
documented the practice of protestors traspassing on the military base
in order to disrupt testing exercises. For these protestors, Allora and
Calzadilla designed special soles for their shoes so that military
personnel would receive a range of messages. In 2003 the artists shipped
a solar-powered battery-bank, charged in Puerto Rico to the exhibition
space, Tate Modern, where it was used to power Dan Flavin’s
fluorescent-light sculpture "Puerto Rican Light (to Jeanie Blake)",
1965. Another work, the acclaimed video “Returning a Sound”, was filmed
on Vieques, a small island adjacent to Puerto Rico, where for sixty
years the US did exercises in military bombardment. This resulted in
pollution, noise and health problems among the inhabitants. The
bombardments ended in May 2003 and the film, in which we see a moped
with a trumpet attached to the exhaust criss-crossing the island, was
shot in 2004. It is at on
ce an echo of the former soundscape, a celebration of the victory of the
civil disobedience movement on the island and as well as a resounding
call to attention for its new struggle for sustainable development. In
these works, as in others, Allora & Calzadilla maintain a strong
poeticism, whilst expressing political ideas of independence and
control, and utilising the solidity of functional materials. When
talking about their work, they often address the responsibility and role
of the artists in social movements.

« On dit que l’art recycle. On voudrait même faire du recyclage un des
modèles de fonctionnement de l’art contemporain. Recycler voudrait dire
: produire à partir d’une matière déjà informée, post-produire donc. On
sait cependant qu’il n’y a pas de matière purement amorphe et que l’art
n’a jamais consisté à imposer des formes à des matières plus ou moins
labiles. Il faudrait plutôt dire produire à partir d’une matière déjà
œuvrée, objectivée ou socialisée, autrement dit produire à partir
d’objets, de morceaux d’œuvres ou de codes sociaux existants. Ce sont
ces morceaux ou ces objets empruntés et détachés de leurs parages qui
seraient recyclés, c'est-à-dire introduits ou réintroduits dans le cycle
de l’art. Mais le recyclage n’et pas un jeu univoque et il ne saurait
par conséquent être un nom de l’art contemporain. Faire passer un objet
ou une œuvre dans un (nouveau) cycle d’opérations artistiques peut
servir de multiples fins et emprunter un nombre indéfini de modes
opératoires. Le recyclage entendu en ce sens n’et d’ailleurs pas une
invention de l’art contemporain. Que pouvait bien faire d’autre un
peintre recomposant certes avec des pigments et une toile par lui tendue
une énième Annonciation, Déposition, Visitation, etc., sinon peindre
dans le cadre « sur imprimé » des tableaux déjà peints. S’il ne recycle
pas une œuvre comme l’a fait Bill Viola en mettant en mouvement la
visitation de Pontormo, il recycle bel et bien un certain nombre de
codes de la figuration picturale : il produit et post-produit en même
temps. Et quel artiste contemporain « post-producteur » pourrait se
permettre de n’être pas aussi producteur, travailleur de matières et de
textures ? Le recyclage artistique n’est pas le propre ni le modèle de
fonctionnement de ‘art contemporain mais une pratique infiniment diverse
et plurielle dont nous voudrions étudier quelque cas en proposant un
cheminement théorique inverse de celui évoqué plus haut : remonter de
ces cas aux articulations conceptuelles qu’ils mettent à jour et qui ne
sont pas forcément celles auxquelles on pense quand on dit que l’art
recycle. »

« AMOUR GLOIRE ET BEAUTE » y oppose la désinvolture, la poésie et
pourquoi pas… l’amour !
Dans un décor de plateau télé, un décor de carton-pâte, clinquant,
kitsch, au cœur d’un centre commercial populaire, des artistes confirmés
et de jeunes talents explorent les notions d’amour, de gloire et de
beauté telles qu’elles nous sont proposées par une société où la dérive
consumériste et le spectacle se marient pour le meilleur et surtout le pire.
Derrière cette façade, les artistes se remettent en question… Ils jouent
avec la culture visuelle contemporaine afin d’inventer un nouveau monde
où êtres et choses seraient libérés des fictions appauvrissantes.
L’exposition se déroule du 1er au 24 juin 2006 au sein de l’espace d’art
de Charenton,
un lieu desservi – heureux hasard – par la station de métro « Liberté ».

Parler sexes
Qu’en est-il, aujourd’hui, de la différence des sexes et, plus
précisément, de la sexuation en matière de création ? Comment et avec
quels outils penser les formes actuelles de la différence des sexes, les
représentations qui en sont proposées, les débats qu’elle suscite ?
Qu’est-ce qu’implique ou que complique l’ambition de devenir artiste,
c’est-à-dire, au sens fort, l’auteur ou bien l’auteure (au féminin)
d’une œuvre ?

Éditorial, par Gilles Froger :
« Le fait est là : l’art est de plus en plus une affaire de femmes. Non
pas que le nombre d’artistes de sexe féminin l’emporterait désormais sur
celui des artistes hommes. Ni celui des galeristes, des commissaires
d’exposition, des organisatrices d’événements et autres responsables de
lieux liés à la scène artistique. Ni même celui des enseignantes.
Précisément non. La partition s’inverse en amont, c’est-à-dire parmi les
étudiants inscrits dans les écoles d’art. On peut s’interroger là-dessus
: que deviennent toutes ces étudiantes, une fois leur diplôme acquis ?
Où disparaissent-elles ? Dans quels métiers ? Quels types d’activités ?
Quelles vies de famille ? Autre constat troublant : dans les écoles
d’art, une nette majorité d’hommes se voit donc désormais chargée
d’évaluer, juger, sanctionner les travaux de cette majorité de plus en
plus sensible d’étudiantes. A supposer même une intégrité sans faille,
une très monacale imperméabilité aux effets de séduction induits par les
écarts de situation et d’âge, ne risquent-ils pas - ne risquons-nous
pas, nous, enseignants hommes - d’être redevables d’un héritage, d’une
vision, d’une compréhension de l’art qui, pour être mal interrogés, n’en
seraient que d’autant agissants ? En d’autres mots : l’enseignement
a-t-il un sexe ? L’art a-t-il un sexe ?
Tel est le point de départ, bien concret, bien ancré sur un terrain
quotidiennement arpenté, qui nous aura amenés, Nathalie Stefanov,
Véronique Goudinoux, Thierry de Duve et moi-même, à interroger, d’une
part, la sexuation de l’art (faire de l’art, aujourd’hui, est-ce la même
chose pour un homme et pour une femme ? Et qu’impliquent, notamment, le
désir, l’ambition pour une femme de devenir artiste, c’est-à-dire, au
sens fort, l’auteure d’une œuvre ?) ; d’autre part à considérer, plus
largement, les formulations actuelles de la question de la différence
des sexes. En 2006, où en sommes-nous ? Comment, et avec quels outils
intellectuels, penser les formes actuelles de la différence des sexes,
les représentations qui en sont proposées, les débats qu’elle suscite ?
L’affaire étant, comme on s’en doute, complexe, nous avons choisi de
présenter ces questions à des interlocuteurs travaillant dans des
sphères diverses : ces interrogations concernent en effet aussi bien
l’art et la littérature que les sciences sociales, l’anthropologie, la
psychanalyse, l’histoire, la philosophie, la biologie, le droit, et bien
d’autres disciplines encore.
C’est ainsi que fut conçu le principe d’un programme diversifié de
recherche et de création comprenant, tout au long de l’année, des
séminaires dispensés conjointement par l’Ersep et le Département Arts
Plastiques de l’Université Lille 3, des ateliers d’écriture et de
sérigraphie, mais aussi un colloque , une exposition de l’artiste
mexicaine Silvia Gruner et le présent numéro, dans lequel bien sûr nos
invités – artistes, écrivains, théoriciens, historiens – ne parlent pas
d’une seule voix.
Il en est de même des étudiants dont nous avons retenu une sélection des
travaux qui nous auront paru les plus pertinents ou les plus à même
d’intéresser notre propos. Leur active participation à l’ensemble des
phases de ce programme, tout comme leur résistance parfois face à
certains partis pris, sont, à nos yeux, les meilleurs des commentaires
sur la nécessité plus que jamais actuelle de notre questionnement. »

évidences. Elles ne seront pas dites « in situ », pourtant elles seront,
par nécessité de leur définition, adaptées aux espaces qui les
